I wonder if there is anyone out there who, like me, who has been slogging through the NMC application process and has taken or will take the OSCE? Are any of you ANGRY about the OSCE? I am.
Those of us applying to be registered in the UK have been put through the ringer, been vetted in every way imaginable (references, one year of practical experience required, education hours, training hours, IELTS, etc), and the fact that they add a practical test on top of that is just redundant, unnecessary, and a huge waste of time and resources for everyone. Especially amid the UK nursing shortage, when they should be facilitating the immigration of well-qualified nurses, not hindering us!
I recently took the OSCE and failed the skills section for absolutely bogus and arbitrary reasons. But before finding out that I had a "partial fail", I initially came out of that test feeling confident, like I had done well, and there is no way they would judge me to be an incompetent nurse. But despite my feeling that I performed well, I also emerged from the test simultaneously angry and frustrated, for having just committed 5 weeks of my life to stressing, floundering through disorganized, overabundant study materials on the Nile website, and traveling across the world... all for a test that clearly has nothing to do with assessing a nurse's competence. All the OSCE succeeds in testing is our willingness to jump through meaningless hoops and pay excessive fees!
The fact that we are subjected to this psychological roller coaster is infuriating... especially from an organization whose bedrock is the holistic caretaking of all people!
And why the exorbitant fees? Why do we have to repay the fee if we sit again for the test? Exactly whose pockets are we lining? The whole thing just rubs me the wrong way.
I'm just appalled at what I and others have been through with the OSCE. I plan to appeal my test result and also lodge a complaint both with the University of Northampton and the NMC, who are the controllers of the OSCE. If anyone is interested, I will share what I write, and I encourage ANYONE who is frustrated to write to the NMC and make yourself heard!!!
Sorry to hear that. May I ask what skill did they fail you?
I know people who took their 3rd time free because they appealed inconsistencies from their first and 2nd take. BUT, you still have to wait another 6 months though and get through the Decision Letter process again. Though, you don't have to wait 6 months to process your DL.
Has anyone been successful in appealing an OSCE decision with the Univ of Northampton? I have failed the OSCE for ridiculous reasons and am beyond furious. The appeal guidelines say you can only appeal the 'process' and not the 'result' (how convenient to be able to dismiss pretty much every single appeal presented). Anyway, I believe I can quote both the Royal Marsden and the Med Administration booklet to support my claim their reason for failure is absurd, but I don't want to waste another month waiting for the appeals process in order to book my resit. And to those of you debating about risking registration and a move to the UK...DONT DO IT. If you don't have to be here, DO NOT risk it unless you have thousands of pounds to waste. The chances of you passing the OSCE the first time are so slim and they will fail you for ANYTHING they can. The study materials they provide are so irrelevant and do not highlight the things they will fail you for, so there's no way to fully prepare except by doing it. And this is if you can even get to the point of being given the right to take the OSCE. It took me FOUR years to battle my way through their ridiculous paper-pushing brainless bureaucracy. Good luck.
I am currently in the process of applying to the NMC for licensure within the UK and have just now come across this thread. I haven't sat the OSCEs ..yet. But I honestly can't say that I have not questioned the OSCEs. I actually was shocked that we had to write a care plan as one of the stations. But I sort of let it roll off my shoulder because its what they are asking of me to become a registered nurse in their country. However, reading some of the posts here about why people failed is ridiculous.... Not drawing a medication with a needle (when you don't have to...), etc. Now I'm terrified to sit this exam! Here in the US we do these "practical"/ stations while in nursing school as a way to learn our skills and for our professors to evaluate us. However, there are multiple ways to skin a cat and they all can be competent ways. Everyone is different in their approach to nursing and failing someone because they didn't perform a task exactly how you did it is not right. I am in the process of reading and practicing now (before I even get my DL) so that nerves don't overcome me. But if there is anything that I can do to help anyone, please do not hesitate to ask! I'll will keep this thread updated with my process of jumping through the many hoops of the UK/NMC/NorthHampton OSCE and hopefully my experience will help others!

Hi! i sent you a pm. Thank you
I am going to appeal as well, I talked to test center manager today, she said we cann't appeal the result of the test, which made me furious! I think NMC can carry on this horrible process because there are not lots of candidates speak out. I do understand them since they need visa to come over with their family, whole family's life rely on the registration so they don't dare say anything. should we (who do care about uk visa) do something about this horrible process? I think we should get media involved, anyone intresting email me. [email protected]
