So the deadline for Azusa Pacific's ELM program is just a couple days away!
Any other fellow applicants out there? I was wondering if the March 1st deadline is strictly for a Spring 2015 start date, or if there's any possibility of an earlier start? January of next year just seems soooo far away.
No mail from APU today. I emailed them and this was their response:
The nursing department met last week and admission decisions are still in
the process of being sent out. I'm sure that you will hear back from
someone (if not myself) sometime within the next week or so. I wish you the
best as you wait to hear about their decision (which will hopefully be
sooner than later :) ).

I was pretty bummed but am definitely going to apply again. I'm currently retaking Microbiology as I took it a while ago during undergrad and got a C. Hopefully I'll be getting an A and reapplying for the summer 2015 start date. My non-science GPA was a 3.4 and my science GPA will be a 3.5 so hopefully that will be good enough! I work as a CNA at a local SD hospital and have my BS in Public Health...I'm not sure how else to make my application more competitive. I hope you both get accepted!!! Fingers crossed.
Seattlenurse, congratulations!! Have you decided if you're going to attend APU or if you're still waiting on other decisions? We should start a fb page if you're coming here!
JNO85, (this is going to be super long, but I'd love to help you any way I can and I hope it's not unwanted advice!) I would definitely retake any class that you have a B or lower in. My prereq GPA was 3.7, and my overall was 3.5. For my volunteer experiences: I volunteered at a hospital every summer, I did community work with a local temple teaching Chinese to children, I tutored disadvantaged children in a very poor school, and I worked at a hospice with terminally ill patients and their families. For work experiences, I've had 4 years experience as a medical assistant, and am currently shadowing a academic doctor who teaches med students and nurse practitioners. I've got my BA in Human Development, and a minor in Sociology (which isn't that relevant to nursing.) I think what really worked to my advantage is my letter to the dean, which I explained my GPA and why it wasn't as high as they wanted it to be (I was at a 2.5 for a very long time before raising my grades up,) and I tied my experiences with sociology to nursing (saying how it gave me a very culturally well-rounded background.) Also my letters of recommendations came from a mentor who happened to be an associate pastor, a professor, and my current boss. I know that they give points for the GPA (which you are working to raise to a 3.5 and would give you maximum points.) They also give points for medical experiences (which you would have since you're a CNA.) Points for church and community work so if you don't have that, I highly recommend you reach out to some organizations for volunteering! I also know that the letter to the dean plays a huge role, so make sure you use it to round out your application, and explain any gaps in the lower parts of your app. Lastly, don't forget the interview process. There is points for the written portion of the interview (which is very easy, it's not even necessary to write in essay format.) There is also points for the actual interview I believe. The interviewer actually told me it's a way for them to filter out whether or not the student would be ready for the challenge of nursing school, and whether or not you are personable and capable of being a good nurse. Make sure you put on your best/friendliest face! and don't forget to ask questions. My interviewer said that it's entirely point based and objective, but in my opinion, what points you get for the interview and written portion is open to their interpretation. Good luck!! and I really hope this helps.....
