Approved 7 hours PHN CE

What Members Are Saying (AI-Generated Summary)

Members are discussing the challenges of meeting requirements for Public Health Nurse certification in California, specifically regarding mandated reporter/abuse classes. CSUN is identified as the primary school offering the necessary courses, but the cost and availability of classes are significant concerns for members. Some members are considering online options and seeking advice on alternative schools that offer the required classes.

I need to find the approved seven hours of training in the prevention, early detection, intervention, California reporting requirements, and treatment of child neglect and abuse CE I can take to submit to the board.

does anyone know a link they can post for this class?

BackCountyGirl,

I have been in contact with CSUN and they have the class that I need (child abuse/mandatory reporter, 428/428L. I have seen a few colleges that offer the class, but it is woven into a phn certificate, which is not what I'm looking for. If you just need the mandated reporter 7-hour class you will have to pay the fees for the class (with lab) that will be about $2000. Definitely not ideal, but looking for a career change it seems doable. If you are looking for additional training/education I did see that both CSUDH and Samuel Merritt both have full programs (which are pretty pricey!). There may be a few other private colleges that offer these classes too, but as the BRN won't respond to me I want to be selective with my choice. I spoke with Melissa Rodriguez at CSUN and this was her response to the online program:

[For the Public Health Nurse Certificate,  NURS 428 & 428L are the courses that you will need, A total of 5 units (3 units lecture/2 units clinical). This course is a semester long which is about 15 weeks (3-4months).

For an in person clinical, this adds to the cost with background clinical clearances, etc, (estimated additional  $200). There is a the virtual program available for clinical, its is about $100 for the program. Choosing the virtual program will allow for online hours to count for your clinical hours.

If you chose to do an in person clinical, you are in charge of finding your own preceptor.

Majority, if not all, students choose to do the online clinical which is a virtual program that has been approved by the BRN.

Currently its $352/unit so for a 5-unit course it would be $1760.00 PLUS Clinical Site.

We offer the course in Fall, Summer, and Spring if there are enough applicants and space.

If you would like to be considered,  please reach out to me via email with providing proof of Bachelor's degree and RN License #.

Acceptance to course depends on  seat availability and meeting all requirements.

We currently have spaces for our PHN course however it is offered in person ( come to campus 2x week).

We would need a total of 10 students to host an online course, currently we only have 4 students including yourself.

Let me know if you are interested in our in person course or if you would like to wait for an update if we meet the required 10 students for an online course.

I will join an online at CSUN for Fall 2024! Can we get 10?

I'm not sure, but posting this information to this site will really be helpful! Every now and then we should respond to keep it fresh, maybe?

I got my BSN in Minnesota 2021 and my program used to be approved to meet CA requirements, but as of July 1, 2024, I don't think it is anymore. I think they now require more clinical hours than I had in my program. I need the PHN for a job I am looking into in San Diego. When looking for the Child abuse classes its only 4 hours for the one linked to the CA social services website.

Should I look for another one? what are you guys doing?

Also, if my courses don't meet the requirements I would be interested in an online class as well to meet the clinical requirements.

You still need the 7 hour course here is the link for the one I took that board did approve https://aspirace.com/

BUT my BSN doesn't align with CA requirements for PHN so I am going to attended the CSUN course online.

Shan1229,

Thank you for the link to the class you took at aspirace.com. I didn't see that the class met the requirements.

Backcountrygirl, have you tried this? I think I'll start here. I'm a bit stuck as I didn't receive a BSN and my course work is a hodgepodge thus not sure which classes I will need to obtain a phn through the state. I will have to call my colleges to see what classes could count (epidemiology and Biostatistics for sure). I really don't want to do another 30 or so units. Shan1229, what classes are you taking fall?

Here is the link to the course you need. You can locate in the drop-down menu, but I'll link it here https://aspirace.com/course/child-abuse-assessment-reporting/

I contacted CSUN to get on the list for the online course if applicable, if we meet the 10 students.

When I talked to the board of nursing regarding the public health certification they said you can apply with what you have and if you don't meet the requirements she said they would send a denial letter and tell you what you are missing. She said it will take awhile as they are backed up with applications. I figure I'll apply for it and most likely get denied based on the clinical hours portion but worth a shot to see if I can just get more hours vs taking a bunch of classes over again.
Also if you are trying to get a hold of the board do the call back option vs waiting on hold I got a call the next day.

It is only one class of 3 unit lecture, and two units of clinical. Not a "bunch". I applied and was denied. That's how I came across all this info. Good luck! If you can avoid it that's awesome.

ohhh! this sounds promising. I just emailed CSUN to remind them I am interested in online.

I was looking at University of Phoenix, but I cant get the BRN to return my calls or emails.

Does university of phoenix offer the extra classes needed for the PHN application?
