Applying for ONP

World International

Published

Hiya guys, I have just received my assessment letter from the NMC. I would like to know the application process in applying for the ONP. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've been told, you need to apply for a university approved by the NMC and the uni will be the ones to secure a supervised placement in an affiliated hospital. It was also stated in the assessment letter that "in order to enrol... you will need to contact an approved educational institution directly".

However, from scouring through a couple of university websites, they prefer that you have secured a practice placement first before applying for the ONP course while other universities did not mention the need for a placement.

That left me a bit confused: apply for a placement in an approved care home/hospital first or go to the university first?

Happy holidays!

Have you looked at this link?

Search NMC approved programmes | Nursing and Midwifery Council

As far as I know from what I've read while scouring the NMC overseas apps, the institution gives you a placement, but it might just be university to university policies. Have you tried directly calling the schools?

Also--if you don't mind, could you post the number of hours you had for your didactic/clinical hours for your nursing program? The NMC site states that nurses need a few thousand hours, although some nurses have reported here that they got approved without having quite so many hours. Are you from the US/Canada/Philippines/etc?

Best of luck to you and congrats on your approval letter!

Yes, I have contacted most of the schools listed in the NMC's website but most of them directed me to their website to apply online.

I think you're right though, it might be uni to uni policies as some of them offer placements attached to their programmes (like South London College and Manchester Metropolitan University) while others offer only the 20 days of protected learning time.

Although I've also heard about non-EU nurses getting approved despite lacking a few hours, I think that maybe NMC will consider the application if the difference isn't more than a 50. I am not entirely sure about it though as it's only based on hearsay. I am from the Philippines by the way and here are my hours..

Theoretical Hours: 2,718 (NMC requires 2,300)

Clinical Hours: 2,314 (NMC requires 1,533)

Total: 5,032

Lastly, do you happen to know a list or a website of supervised practice placement providers here in London?

Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

hi wolvie,

i just wanted wanted to know if you did find any sponsor for the supervised practice placement as of this date? I am also looking for one. I am based in London and have my NMC decision letter as well.

I was hoping if you could help me out with finding a Uni as well.

Thanks!

Hello cycyzie,

Unfortunately, I still haven't found a placement for practice. I think there are a number of placements far outside of the London area, but I am considering that as a desperate last choice since that would entail additional accommodation costs on my part. In the meantime, you can try directly contacting the list of NHS hospitals here (http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/cgi-bin/employer_list.cgi?action=search&sha=S07) to see if they offer the adaptation programme. I have called a handful of them and they said to call back sometime in April or May.

For the universities, it seems that most of the ones in the NMC's list (http://www.nmc-uk.org/Approved-Programmes/ aren't providing the ONP anymore. Well, the ones in London at least. I called NMC and asked them if it was a recently updated list and they said "yes". Oh well. Try to contact City University London, Anglia Ruskin University, University of Hertfordshire and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Good luck and keep me updated with your progress!

Hi Wolvie,

Are you from the Philippines and within Metro Manila?

Hi helloimdee and wolvie,

I'm currently in the same dilemma. Have you found a sponsor for the supervised practice placement yet? I'm still in the Philippines as of the moment, but will be leaving in a few months. I'm about to take the IELTS and pass it to NMC... hopefully I get the feedback before we all leave for the UK. I'm afraid I wouldn't find a sponsor for the ONP which could leave me unemployed. What do you think is my best option? I'm a British citizen but has trained and worked in the Philippines as a nurse. Hope you could shed some light on this matter. Thank you!:)

Hi guys just my 2 cents on this subject.

I think if you want a sponsor you will need one that will lead to being registered either as

an Operating Theatre nurse or a Critical Care nurse. I don't think you will find any other sponsor for your ONP. The reason being other specialties are not in the Shortage Occupation list.

This means that to get your sponsorship you will need a private hospital that will take you in. NHS is definitely a no go.

I haven't been in the UK since '08 but I was there for a good 8 years. If you are from the Philippines and you are not a Critical care nurse or Operating Theatre nurse with tons of experience and tons of money then don't bother, at least for now. There are no jobs.

FYI. The only other classification on the shortage list is for managers - band 7 or 8.

Thanks bobby! It's really helpful. I'll consider transferring to the OR then. But I'll try my luck in March since we'll all be in the UK for a vacation. But if nothing materializes, then I'd go back with my family to the Philippines. :)

If you are a British citizen then you don't have to worry about a specialty just the ONP. Job shortage list is just for those looking for sponsorship. British citizen means you are already set to work in the UK you just need to meet NMC requirements

Hi ,

I'm just wondering if you have successfully registered. Im about to start my ONP but I'm still looking for a sponsor. Do you have recommendations where could I possibly contact one? I hope you get back to me thanks
