I would image that you would apply to school of nursings that do the course but will probably be very expensive and you would have to apply for a F1 visa and show that you can support yourself as working is very strict especially the first semester. Also if you are planning to return back to UK or Ireland there is no guarantee that the course will be accepted. If you already a midwife then you apply to the state BON but they don't have the courses like over here and will probably require you to be a general nurse first.

Would help if you could post a little bit more info on what you are requiring

Midwifery certification in the US is called the CNM, certified nurse midwife; and it requires that the nurse hold the MSN degree to be able to get that designation. Most from your country just get a job in Labor and Delivery here in the US.

Requirements are the same for the US, all now require the MSN for an Advanced Practice RN Certification. And you must be able to qualify for the RN certification and be able to take the NCLEX-RN exam before anything. Once you have the RN license for a state, then you can go for the Advanced license, but need the NCLEX-RN to be written first.

If you go to the website for that BON, just look under the Advanced Practice RN to see the additional requirements that need to be completed. It is written there.

Google the "IL Department of Financial and Professional Regulation" to find information on nursing licensure in IL.

Hi Silverdragon,

I am a RGN already. I am interested in doing midwifery! am aware it will be costly am prepared to cover that. Just not sure what way I go about it!!

First of all, you will need to have your credentials evaluated by CGFNS with their CES program, Credentials Eval Service. That is for additional schooling as well as for licensure. You will need to complete an MSN program to be able to work as a CNM in the US, and that is for any state.

Most programs are actually requiring several years of experience in a Labor and Delivery setting, especially as a foreign nurse coming over here. You will need to have the RN license from the US before starting anything with more schooling/training. I would start with that.

You can check out the other forums that we have here for that specialty.

Have NCLEX done..

Looking to apply for a Midwifery school but seems RGN is not enough to gain entry. pity..

All of the midwifery schools for the CNM designation require that you have equivalent of the BSN to gain entry. There are a few Direct entry MSN programs, but they also require at least a Bachelor's degree before being permitted to enter. With the three year programs in the UK, they do not give you enough hours.

You may wish to go for the BSN and get that done while you are waiting to come to the US. You will need equivalent of at least a Bachelor's degree to get into any of these programs, if you wish to do them as a nurse; and not as a lay-midwife.

I see!

Thanks for info!!

You are quite welcome.:balloons:
