Applying to jobs in different states from where you license is.

I'm in NY and I've been looking to apply to out of state jobs maybe in CT, VA, or elsewhere. I am wondering how this process works. If I put my NY license on the application will they assume that I'll be endorsing my license to their state? I don't want to pay for the endorsement fees prematurely before securing a job elsewhere.

Unfortunately, NY does not yet participate in the Nursing Licensure Compact - although I understand that legislation is pending. So this does add a layer of complexity to your relocation. You'll have to jump through all the hoops to become licensed in your new state. Each state process can be different in terms of documentation needed, process steps and length of time required.

So - the answer is "it depends" - Some job listings will clearly state "must be have current state license" in the job listing, but that's not always the case. Some employers won't take your application seriously unless you are already licensed and 'good to go' in their state. This will be more likely if the state licensure process is slooooow or there are lots of qualified applicants available locally. BUT - if you have mad skills in a high-demand specialty, I'm sure they'll want to work with you!
