Applying to community college nursing programs...gpa?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, I already have a B.S., but I'm taking pre- reqs at the local community college and petitioning for this coming september. I was just wondering what gpa you usually need to get in...I have a 3.37...is this good enough?

It should be.

I have a HS GPA of 3.3. When I went to apply for my pre-reqs they said it was more than enough.

Around here they usually require a GPA of 2.8 to get in and take courses, but then they say you can't get less than a B-.

There is a minimum of a 3.0 GPA for most nursing programs I have seen. Some school that have a really nice nursing program and school in general have a GPA of 3.2, making it harder for everybody to apply. They don't usually want to filter through 200 applicants who have a GPA of 2.8 so some school raise the standard.

more feedback would be great!!

I think it depends on the school and what they require. If your school is heavily 'grade-based' when accepting nursing student applications, I'd say its fine. Not all schools are the same. My school takes into consideration many other things as well grades when accepting students. They look at the whole application portfolio as well as the grades. For example: I was required to submit an entrance essay, references, recommendations, TEAS exam, and transcripts. My school does the point system when looking at grades.

Yes, its competitive. But, you're GPA looks good. :)

Good luck.

Call your school's Nursing department and ask about the GPAs of students who typically get in. Ask if there's anything else you can do to have better chances. And don't apply until you have all the prereqs done.

It depends on your school. I have a bunch of friends who are in nursing school at the community college right now and they told me that you get 4 points for a 3.5 GPA and above. The rest of the decision is made based on repeat applicants (1 point maximum), and HESI 2 scores (91-100 = full points).

yea, I know it's based on some kinda points system but they don't really explain it too well in the packet so I'm not sure how many points you get per gpa. I guess I'll just hafta wait til march, I'm not that patient:(

It depends not only on the school's general admission standard, but also on the competition for that semester's open spots. If it's flooded with 3.8's your chances are reduced. If the average applicant is more like 3.0, maybe not. I've seen 2.8, 3.0, and 3.5. If your school doesn't have anything more concrete for you, looks like you'll have to wait and see. Good luck.

Every program is different. Pick up the phone and call an admissions adviser and talk with them. Don't wait until March, call them.
