Applying for another job

When applying for another job, should I tell my current employer about it? Or just have them sort of be surprised if they receive a call from a future potential employer? I'm not sure if there is an any "etiquette" involved in this. I'm planning on applying to another position at another hospital and then hopefully going PRN at my current job. I just don't want to burn any bridges!

i would let any new interview know that they should not contact your current job.

You generally put your current job in jeopardy if they find out you are actively interviewing - no matter if you intend to stay on in some capacity. It doesn't matter to them. I've known part timers losing hours because their employer found they were looking for additional hours at another place. People today want to own you without giving you anything in return.

Be careful.
