Applied to Penn, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt & Marquette...any out there familiar?

Published

i recently applied to the direct entry or in some cases the combined bsn/msn programs at University of Pennsylvania (pediatric oncology nurse practitioner), johns hopkins university (primary care pediatric nurse practitioner), marquette university (primary care pediatric nurse practitioner) and Vanderbilt University (primary care nurse practitioner). i will graduate in may with a bs of sociology and have completed the nursing prerequisites. my gpa is currently a 3.5, gre score 1160, volunteer and shadowing experience in an emergency room and children's hospital and great letters of recommendation. i'm nervous because i received c's in biology and chemistry my freshman and sophomore year of college and am wondering how much this is going to affect the strength of my application. i have since taken microbiology and earned an a, and also have received a 4.0 gpa the past three semesters.

i was wondering if there was anyone out there either currently or previously in any of these programs or that has applied to these programs that could share their gpa, gre, experience, etc. if i am not accepted this year, i plan to study for the gre and retake it to raise my score, also retake biology and chemistry as well as additional sciences to prove my competency and then reapply to these same schools next year. i've definitely got my heart set on these after visiting and interviewing.

any information or advice would be appreciated! : )

Congrats Allison, that's awesome! I just read on the penn portal that decisions will be up on Friday at 3pm EST!!!! OMG, I'm so nervous! I'm anticipating the worst so I'm not too disappointed...

Thanks so much!! I was definitely excited/shocked. When my phone rang yesterday and I saw it was Maryland I freaked out haha. That makes me nervous for Penn, keep me posted when you hear back. Best of luck : )

So I"m speechless....I got into Penn.

That's fantastic! I'm so happy for you! Are you leaning towards JHU or Penn at this point? Have you heard from any of the other schools yet?

I got wait listed. Not bad...there's still hope! I emailed Filomena to confirm my spot and asked how it works...whether it's a ranking system or placed on the list according to when you confirm your spot back. If it's the latter I might have a shot b/c I emailed her back like lightning! haha oh well more waiting for me. Congrats again Allison!

Congrats alrees! That is wonderful news!

I was waitlisted, as well. It certainly course be worse, but I'm so nervous. Now I am hoping we learn Columbia decisions later to give this a little more time. I can't believe we may not find out until March 31. That's a bit late.

I have the same questions about the waitlist. Does anyone know how the it works? Do we get contacted as spots open up or do they rank applicants?

As much as this is better than a flat out rejection, it certainly makes things more complicated!

Good luck!

Thanks so much!! I was honestly shocked...it had to have been the interview that helped me bc my gpa/gre is nothing impressive. I have no idea what I will pick, I'm hoping I can visit again and get some advice. Keep me updated with what you guys find out about the wait list. Honestly, I think that means you have a wonderful shot at getting in!

Congrats on getting into Penn. I got accepted too. I am super surprised, but excited. I only applied to schools in Philadelphia so this was definitely my first choice. I hope to start in June as long as everything transfers ok. I am a little nervous because they seem to have such strict criteria for each of course. I would hate to have to retake a bunch of classes. It would hardly seem worth it. Anyway, maybe I will be seeing you there in a few months. I wish you luck in your decision making.

Hi Ashley! Congratulations to you too! Which program did you apply to? I will private message you my email address so we can get into contact.

Still waiting to hear from Vandy. But I read something that said that most of their MSN programs will have their decision made between Feb 15th and April 15th. I hope its Feb. 15th, April is very late to hear back.

Anybody hear anything different?

I got a finacial Aid packet from the school of nursing (not the regular ones from Vandy), someone told me thats a good sign, anybody recieve this and not get in?

Thanks

CONGRATS to all the the people that got into PENN and Hopkins 2 great programs!!

Hey! I think it is a good sign you received the financial aid packet. I received it the other day and over the summer when I met with Terry Witherington (the PNP director), she said that was a good sign to receive the packet. I don't think it is a gurantee but definitely a good sign! Also, they told me that it is rare to hear back later than March 1st, so hopefully it is coming up soon. I'm so torn between Penn/Hopkins. I did find out today that I was accepted to Marquette but I don't know much about their program... Vanderbilt is such an amazing school and Nashville happens to be my favorite place on earth : ) I'm sure you will absolutely LOVE it if you go there. Best of luck, keep us updated!

CONGRATS!

Let us know which you choose. Penn or Hopkins holy cow thats a hard one, I am not sure there is a wrong choice between the two. lol

Hello there! I realize this is a few years later, but as someone who is making the decision between Vandy (I'm currently a Vandy undergrad and absolutely LOVE Nashville), Penn & Johns Hopkins for the BSN/MSN program in FNP, I am interested to know what you all ended up choosing!

Any insight on what to really value? Financials are really important for me because I don't want to end up with massive debt...have you guys felt that the debt you took one was worth it? Not?

Thanks a lot!

Jess
