Applicants to Portland area schools

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Greetings fellow future nurses! I just mailed my application packets for Mt. Hood CC, Clackamas CC, and Portland CC today and excited to be done with them. I have my proctored essay for OHSU this Wednesday and am a little worried because I have NO idea what is going to be asked. I haven't been able to get any feedback on what is on any of the essays. I am also applying to Chemeketa but am probable wasting my time as I am missing 2 of the pre-recs required there that aren't required at the OCNE schools. Well, the worst they can say is no, right?

Anyway, the Oregon Nursing Programs sections has been a little dead lately so I was hoping to spark some dialogue. This is my first year applying and I'm already getting a little stressed. I kind of have a lot riding on getting in somewhere next fall. My fiance and I are kind of planning on it. I'm hoping that doesn't backfire! How's it going with everyone?

I got on the waitlist for OHSU as well! Fingers crossed for all of us and congrats to those who got in!!!!

Hi Happiness,

Congrats on getting onto the waitlist. We're not out of it yet!

Fingers crossed.

Thanks Reid! Congrats to u too! Congrats to all who get an invite or an alternate. Nurselaura, I had a 4.0 gpa in prereqs which are all done, no prior degree, and 12 years experience as a paramedic. I felt the best about my OHSU essay. I hope I have a chance at getting a spot. I'm willing to go to any campus, assuming I was offered a spot. It seems like a lot of the nurses I've met that went to OHSU had a prior bachelors degree, and know that OHSU as a whole prefers people who are overqualified, so I'm honestly not expecting to get in. PCC is where I believe I have the best shot, as I took all my prereqs there. Good luck!

Hi all, I received my letter today from OHSU and I have been accepted into the Fall BSN program. I am still waiting on the PCC letter and I will make my final decision at that point. Good luck to all of you on the wait list and I hope you get good news in the coming weeks. Just FYI, I have a BS in Management Infomation Systems - 11 years as a IT Project Manager and about 2 years experience as a CNA. My pre-req GPA was about a 3.9. Again good luck to all. :)

Got OHSU letter in the mail today...."Admission denied":( I am terribly disappointed....I have all pre-reqs completed with 3.8 GPA. No prior degree and volunteer experience in the ER plus a second language proficiency....I guess next step is to take CNA and work until next year's app season. Bummer for me. Congrats to all those who are accepted!

Valeriatackitt,

I'm so sorry. I would expect that along with your good grades, your second language proficiency would have been extremely desirable. This is strong evidence of an amazingly competitive year and program. Good luck in your apps next year!

Osuchris,

Congratulations! In the words of Thomas Edison, "Holy Crap!" (I'm sure he said this at some point). If I may ask, what do you feel are ups and downs of PCC's program in comparison to OHSU? I admit that I am not very familiar with their program, but that said, it sure would be difficult to turn down an OHSU spot.

Congratulations again and good luck with everything!

Thanks Reid,

It was definitely a holy crap moment for me. I felt pretty good about it - but sheesh - there are a lot of really, really good applicants (on this board especially) and I wasn't expecting an accept letter, more an alternate letter. The ups for PCC is that it is much cheaper and I can finish either in two years with an ADN or have the option for the third at OHSU and finish w/ the BSN. The downs for PCC is that OHSU is a very, very good program and well respected across the country. I have heard from a few people (and earlier in this thread) that the transition to the program style of OHSU from PCC is very difficult and there are more people who wash-out of the OHSU program after PCC. One of the nurses I work with is a PCC graduate trying to do the OHSU online RN to BSN program, and she is having a tough time adjusting to the difference in styles. I also think that the clinical experience of OHSU might be more stable - as they are tied to their hospitals and clinics. I have until the 25th of May to decide and send in a $200 deposit. I hope PCC isn't that delayed and gets their letters out soon. Thanks again and good luck!!! :)

Valeriatackitt - I really would recommend getting your CNA certification and getting into a skilled/rehab facility. The residents/patients I work with are usually just out of the hospital and the care is as close as I can get without getting my CNA2 and working in a hospital. There is a huge difference between nurses who have been aides before and those who haven't and really after doing this gig for a while now, I can't imagine being a nurse without having done the type of care I do now. I was in your boat last year and I understand and know how disappointed you are feeling. Good luck for next year!!

Hi Osuchris,

Thanks for the insight into these programs and good luck with your decisions in the upcoming month. Also, I definitely agree with promoting CNA experience. A friend of mine who is an RN has told me how much her CNA experience helped her during both school and work. I will graduate from my CNA program in 4 or 5 weeks and will be in the job market at that point.

Again, thanks and congratulations!

Cheers

Does anyone know the earliest that OHSU will notify people on the waitlist for the regular BSN program?

The lady from admissions I talked to on the phone today said people could be notified as soon as right now, to as late as the week before classes start. She would not give any specifics about how many people were chosen as alternates, or where I was on the list.

It's so frustrating that they will not even give you a rough estimate of your position on the list or how many alternates there even are...I don't understand the logic behind it

Anyone out there getting ready for their CCC interview??? Mine is Friday. Also, I wonder how delayed PCC will be...hmmm.
