Appeal Failed Class?

Published

Just took my lab skills competency exam. The skill was wound irrigation and dressing change. I did everything perfectly except the instructor said that when I threw a 4x4 away, part of my sterile glove just barely grazed part of another 4x4 gauze and therefore broke sterile field. So she failed me and bc it was the final competency, I fail the entire course. Several other students said they messed up during their competencies but the instructors let them slide bc we have already been checked off on these skills. I understand I messed up, but why didn't I get the special treatment they did? I have a B in the class and get A's and B's on my tests, do well in clinical and yet I fail the entire course bc of one minor mistake. Is this appealable? I've never failed ANYTHING, and I know I messed up a little but why wasn't I treated the same as the others who were able to catch a break??

If you missed a critical indicator then you should have failed. Do you know for a fact that these other students were allowed to slide over a critical indicator? Were you there? Have you seen their paperwork? You have no idea and can't go off of idle chit chat. You can go and speak to your instructor or you can appeal, don't expect though to use the special treatment thing.

Unless you can prove the allegations that others were erroneously passed, you don't have a leg to stand on. I would still go through with the appeal. You never know, it might turn out in your favor. Good luck.

Did the other students mention what they did wrong when it happened? Did you?

In my program, if you make an error by breaking sterility, you are not failed on the check off if you mention that you know you broke sterility and would need to reglove or need a new sterile item or wherever. They never had us actually redo it to save time, but did expect us to know what we did.

If if you broke sterility without noticing then that would be grounds for failing the check off. When you say final competency, does that mean this was the final attempt and you had failed the first attempt, or does it just mean that it's the last one for the semester?

the type of answer you get about your failure will partly depend on that.

I would appeal and ask for another chance to demonstrate your skill. I wouldn't ask for special leniency and an automatic pass. With your record, you might get a 2nd chance.

No one here could possibly know the answer to these questions. You need to ask your instructor.
