AORN Periop 101

I am currently doing periop 101 through my internship, i am a recent grad and this is my first job so all the interns are having to do this class. Luckily, we don't have to pay because it costs a lot! All of periop is online, you read through a section of power points on a certain OR topic and then you take a quiz on it after you are done. It is a lot of information but it is helpful, I wouldn't buy the program if you are not in nursing school yet. See if you can shadow an OR nurse for a few days, that is the best way to see if you like the OR if you have not done that yet

I have new or minimal experienced nurses do the course in the first year of hire. Looking at the ST one too.

I am a peri-op 101 grad. It was a good orientation to the OR since you learn nothing of operating room nursing in nursing school. Landing a job in the OR isn't easy. We had 40 applicants, 20 interviewed, and 4 were hired. Needless to say, it's pretty competative. Training an OR nurse is also very expensive. I'm under a 3 year contract that started after I was was off orientation (which lasted 6 months) and if I leave early I have to pay back part of the $28,000 they spent on training me. BUT, I LOVE being in the OR. LOVE IT!!!

Did you have to sign the contract before you started the program? Or do you decide if you want to stay after the course is completed? How much of the $28,000 would you had to pay back?

You usually sign the contract when you accept the position (before you start the program) and the amount you have to pay back under such a contract depends on how much of your contract you have left at the point you resign. They usually pro-rate the payoff, although you would have to read the contract carefully before signing it to make sure of this.

I taught the periop 101 course. It is the best program you can do to get a good over view of the OR. I included scrubbing, central processing, & some time with Anes thesia & PACU. Scrubbing helps you understand surgical process & helps you anticipate as a circula

I have a little more than one year experience in outpatient surgery centers and currently have 3 job offers from various hospitals. I am between 2 of the hospitals and one is working on cases like transplants, robotic surgery, and cardiac. This hospital will require a lot of call which I've never done before. The other hospital is offering a periop 101 course, but it's with peds. I've never worked with peds, and I might like it but med math in the OR scares me. Any advice on which one to take? They both pay around the same amount, but the call one will probably pay a lot more in the long run. Do you think I need it with a year under my belt?
