Anyone work at sick kids ? (Toronto)

Hi everyone,

I was offered a position at sick kids. I know it is a non unionized hospital so just wanted some input from nurses who currently work there. I was offered a contract position so I am still gonna to work part time at my current position (which is unionized).

Any input is appreciated! Thank you!

Congrats! what would you like to know?

Thank you for replying! I was just wondering how it is to work in a non-unionized environment (workload, salary). Also, since I was offered a contract, wanted to know the chances of getting a permanent position once it’s over.

I think in terms of workload you get 1-3 patients depending on the unit. I only worked there for a year but I think salary is quite similar to the ona rates for hospitals. We might get a quarter more roughly. Personally what stood out the most are the coworkers. 99% of them are super helpful and supportive. Doctors are also very respectful and friendly as well. I think its very likely you'll get a permanent position after the contract. Is it the new grad program?

So, sounds like overall... staff morale is good? Is understaffing a major issue? What units are less fast-paced?

I worked there for over a year. I think depending on the unit. But the unit that I worked at was toxic, overworked, no breaks. It’s non-unionized so they don’t really advocate  for you. Co-workers are toxic, nurses have the “know-it-all” attitude and they seem to be out to get each other. Pay is very comparable to ONA, just couple cents higher. But seriously the commute and expensive parking was not that worth it for me.

I did final consolidation there on the psychiatry unit. Would never work there. Nurses are uppity and toxic environment.
