Anyone doing any travel dialysis nursing?

Hi! I'm intrested in finding out about travel nursing in the dialysis field. I've been contacted by Foundation Enterprises and some other travel agencies and was wondering if this was a good option to try out. I've been a dialysis RN for 7+ years and I am currently working as a Clinical Specialist where I am traveling 100% but I'm all over the place and would like to stick closer to home so that I can see my husband more than 2 or less days a week. I didn't know if hooking up with a travel agency would be a good alternative since I love the travel but I seem to be going all over the country right now.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Theresa

I googled foundation travel/nursing but did not find it. Any advice? If you've chosen dialysis as a specialty are they the best?, Thanks, Kerry

I'm looking into travel nursing with a dialysis specialty, any suggestions? I've talked to Foundation, as well as other "general" travel agencies. Anybody have any experienciences with this? I'm leaning towards PPR or On Assignment, if not Foundation, please give me input.

bdhdrn, where can I find info from 'on assignment' and ppr? I'm searching as you are to go with the right co., thanks, kerry

I found them by searching these forums and reading, reading, reading. Highway hypodermics.com has a huge list of travel companies. You can find OA at oanursetravel.com. PPR is ppralliedhealth.com. The recuiters I talked with seemed really nice, but they didn't have a lot of jobs in areas I wanted to go right now(don't want the southeast in the summer), or the pay wasn't acceptable. The best luck as far as assignment choice and pay is with Foundation and Abetta. Good Luck, and wish me luck!

Thank you, that will be very helpful, Kerry;)

I did travel nursing for 5 yrs with OA. in labor and delivery. Quit the road in 2004 and took permanent position in dialysis at home. Loving the change. OA is a great co. I had excellant recruiters. I can't speak to assignments in dialysis, but I wish you luck. I worked from coast to coast. New hampshire to Oregon , and places in the middle. Got to see alot of the US that I would never have experienced and took care of a diverse group of patients that I woundn't have experienced at home. Travel can be lonely, and you have to be on your toes, as you are the "new " kid all the time, but it was a great time over all for me. Good luck!!

What about contracting yourself to one of the larger i.e. FMC, DaVita? You can ask for more money and pay your own insurance and benefits. Might work. Have met alot of traveling nurses and they love it as they have said they do not have to put up with the BS that goes on in the units. One told me that she tried to direct techs in doing procedure correctly and telling techs wrong dialysate bath but the attitude was 'who cares'. Have heard alot of negative stories of units from traveling nurses (who left for that reason).

I can not understand why some units use the same bath on every patient. To me, this is not individualized care and all patients are being treated the same without due consideration of what their K+ levels might be. So, if a patient's K+ is 6.4 or 3.0 they would both receive a 2K.. For me, I think that is not ok, not at all. Patients have enough difficulties and ot have to be even more careful with their K intake when the bath, for instance is not coinciding with the levels just is not ok. Just my opinion! Even new to dialysis, it still does not make sense.

I just finished my first assignment with Foundation Medical Staffing. They have been very professional and I'm very pleased with them as well as all the options they have for dialysis travel assignments.

As for the comment about all patient running on a 2K bath at a particular clinic....I also agree...NOT OK! Where is that clinic? I want to make sure I don't go there...I wouldn't be in agreement with that practice...not under my nursing license. Anyone else hear of such a thing?

my husband and i traveled with ppr, and were very unhappy with our recruiter. i realize that the company is probably just fine, but we had a miserable experience on the one assignment we did for them!
