Anyone here taking prereqs at Suffolk Co. Comm. College?

Published

Hi Everyone!

I am a student currently taking my prereqs for the nursing program at Suffolk County Community College. Are there any others here at Suffolk? I was hoping to find some other ladies/gents that are currently studying there so we could get to know one another and maybe chat about our experiences. Anyone?? :)

Digoe, I have finished all my prereqs for Suffolk and I am just taking a Social Psych course for Stonybrook and applied for both, hoping to hear good news anyday.... I thought the AP I and II were pretty challanging especially since the bottom line is that an A is everyone's target grade with the tough competition for entrance into the RN program. Psych 101 has a lot of good professors and is a little less intense, you can also take it as an online course if you prefer (lots of reading but save the trip to class). English I transferred in so I don't have any experience with that here. I also knocked out the Microbiology last semester and had a new full time prof, she was excellent, and made it, dare I say, fun. Don't laugh, I am definately a science geek!!! :) Do whatever you can to ace those 4 course (AP I and II, English and Psych) as they are the only yardstick for entrance. Also, call admissions, they hold monthly meetings for a program overview so you know just what you have to do and can ask questions unique to your situation. Good luck!

Also, I posted on the thread for those waiting to hear about fall 2011 class so it would be up at the top of the threads, this is not bad to read as it addresses some good info about the program

Hi Buckeroo!

Thank you for your reply! I am currently taking PSY 101 (A so far) Eng 101 (A so far) had to take a remedial math course this semester AND one over the summer so unfortunately for me those 4 course are NOT all I need to take. Math has always been a struggle for me BUT I am doing well. Have an A in my current math class. I also took an intro to Health Careers course they offer which I also have an A in. It's a little frustrating that I have to take these math classes BEFORE I can take A&P I or II, but I will get through them. I struggled in math in HS but seem to be doing well now. It's just amazing I think, whether it's maturity, the professor, or just that the stars are aligned now LOL but Math is NOT the enemy anymore! Granted, I still struggle but not to the extent I did when I was in H.S. or college the first time around. I will never be a mathematician but I know I can get through nursing school. Interesting.... I have ALWAYS excelled at sciences, but never math. Odd.. by most peoples standards. I have a question for you... WHEN can you apply to the nursing program? Must I finish all of the prerequisites first? Or can I be in the process of taking them when I apply? My plan was to apply for fall of 2012 as, as far as I am aware we can only apply for the nursing program in January of that year in which we are applying. Also, I could not find the post that you mentioned for me to reference. Could you post the link please? Nice to 'meet' you! And hope to talk to you again!

Sorry had to get out of the house this morning. To continue... I had to take basic chem so that I could take A&P I and II. Glad I did, there were a few things it did help me understand, especially the hydrogen bonding, peptide bonds and such in protein synthesis. Plus, when I took Chem in high school, we were still writing on slates and had to stoke the wood stove every hour!!!! So it had changed quite a bit. If you are ready you can apply up to the end of say 2011, I think the deadline is the first week of so in Jan. That would be for the Fall start dates. Check the catalog, I think there is a part time evening RN that starts in Brentwood in the Spring if that fits your situation better. I have been pretty impressed with the BIO teachers at Ammerman, the ratings on "ratemyprofessors.com" are usually a fairly good guide if taken with a grain of salt.

There is some great information on the assorted threads here, but always check with admissions too. Please make sure you go to the nursing information seminar that admissions holds once a month or so, absolutely great information there and you can get specific questions about you situation answered by the gentleman that runs the process.

Also, although they are a drag, I did take courses over the wintersession and summer sessions. Took A&P II over the summer which was crazy, but it was like ripping a band-aide off quickly :crying2: , hurt for a while but was great when it was over. Best of luck and kick butt in those A&P course.

I am waiting a response as well for the program to start in the Fall. The 4 pre-requisites (A&P 1 & 2, ENG 101, and PSY 101) must be completed before the application deadline. I applied around October while I was still taking A&P 2, but it ended before the application deadline of January so it was ok. If you were to take A&P2 (or whatever pre-req) in the spring semester than you would have to wait until the following semester to apply. So in order to apply for fall 2012 start, all 4 pre-reqs must be completed by the end of winter semester of 2011. Hope that makes sense.

I had to same problem so even though I started at Suffolk in Fall '09, I couldn't apply until Fall '10 for a Fall '11 start. I had to take remedial math before I could take Chemistry, which I needed to take A&P 1 (took summer '10). If I didn't take A&P 1 over the summer than it would have been another year before I could apply to the nursing program.

Oh wow... after reading this I am really worried. I don't think I am going to be able to apply for fall 2012 now either! I still have to take another Math, Chem, A&P 1 and A&PII. If I take Math and chem over the summer (which will be awful but doable) I still have A&P I and II to take which of course I can't take together in the fall !!! :crying2: :crying2:

any ideas??

Not everyone has to take chemistry as a pre-req for a&p 1. If you took it in high school and did well than you don't have to and you can jump right into a&p 1. Check with the advisement office for your case. I did take it in high school and I thought I wouldn't need to take it again, but they made me. It worked out ok for me though because I'm hoping to go to stony brook and I needed it for their programs pre-reqs anyway.

Thanks for your response. I know that I have my H.S. transcript here, and I am reasonably certain I took Chem, but have NO clue how I did in that class. I will have to find it. I have a sinking feeling I may have to re-take it. I'm $crewed I think! :-( :crying2:

KJM I think you are right on the money. Seem to recall something in the prereq for A&P I or somewhere that and 80 or better in HS Chem is enough to get into A&P. But the best advice was to go down and talk to an adviser after looking through the catalog. Good luck Digoe

Thanks Buckeroo,

I just pulled out my HS transcript -- I got a frickin 70 in Chem! Congrats to me for GOOFING OFF IN HS! Uggg... Looks like I'm taking it again. Hmmmmm there has to be a way around this. Another school or something that has a different deadline for enrollment into the Nursing Program as it looks like I will never be able to apply for SCCC's nursing program -- unless its for 2013, which I CANNOT wait for.
