Anyone starting RN at Miami Dade College Fall 2009?

U.S.A. Florida

Hi and Congrats to all that starting the RN Accelerated/Part time/Full time/Transitional option this August 2009 at MDC!

I have read tons of posts from prior years of former and present MDC RN students that were in our shoes not so long ago.

We have a little over two months b4 we start and our lives as we know them will not be the same. We have several hurdles left and more to come specially day of registration.

I took the liberty of bundling several posts into one for the sake of brevity. However, it's from the same helpful person.

The long and the short of "sequences" is that it makes it easier for you to register and not end up with scheduling conflicts. For instance Fundamentals of Nursing is a lecture that runs the whole semester....but Pharmacology Math, Fundamentals Clinical and Lab all have different start and stop dates. So, to keep you from picking a schedule that will end up with a conflict in the middle of the semester...they label each group of classes that are scheduled to work together as a "sequence". Just make sure you pick all your classes from the same sequence..and you will be OK>

You will be registering for your own classes. Usually, right after orientation.

During first semester, basically the class is divided into two schedules. You can choose which one you want...as long as there is space. Since they don't try and fit ALL of the generic nursing classes into one theory lecture (such as Fundamentals), they simply say make two different schedule combinations for clinical, labs and lectures. ONe is sequence one..the other is sequence two...you choose which one works for you. Also, if your in sequence one...you are NOT locked into "sequence 1" through out school. You can choose which ever sequence you want for each semester.

As for arriving early for orientation, there really is no need...other than getting a good seat. Like I said, your going to register after orientation....and usually there is a mad dash to the registrars office. If you know how to register online with "shopping cart" or "speed" registration...just pick out the reference numbers for each class in which ever sequence...and go to the library or success center and use a computer there. Each clinical group has 10-12 seats in it...pick one that you can get to easily for pre-assignment and clinical.

In Semester 2 pharmacology you will be learning the various medication as they are grouped into pharmacologic classes. For each class you will learn drug name generic(trade)/indications/dose/pharmacokinetics/mechanism of action/adverse reactions and side effects/nursing interventions and patient teaching. It sounds like a lot...but it isn't too bad. Just get to know the mechanism of action..and most of it will fall into place. I highly recommend buying a set of Mosby's Nursing Drug Cards. They are perfect for clinical and are quick..too the point and have the information you need..nothing else. Great for those times when your clinical instructor stumps you with a question as you are walking towards a patients room about to administer that drug.

Another helpful book is Nursing Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy..a great suplament to your pharm text book. Also...LEARN how to use your drug guide.

Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope, allheart.com and pick out some comfy white pants, have a copy of Nursing Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy and Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy. I also love Mosby's Nursing Drug Cards. OHH Yeah...make sure you get a NCLEX review book very early in nursing school.

I really like Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination. It comes with a CD that has lots of practice questions on it...as well as a good review guide for pretty much every section of nursing school.

PDA with Taber's Cyclobedic Medical Dictionary, Thompson Clinical Xpert, and Epocrates loaded on it. Very handy, but not a necessity. A recorder for lectures is definitely handy. Heck, you might as well get a rolling bag to pack all your stuff in..unless you have a strong back.

On the success center computers...there is a program called "test taking strategies for nursing students". MAKE SURE YOU DO IT! It will help you out tremendously.

I have heard that some things have changed, for example in that 'mad dash' to the computers everyone who registers after Orientation at 3pm will have to register at 4pm for thats when you are allowed to start registration.

Also, I have compiled a list of recommended professors let me know if I should post them for all to see.

More important, I would love to compile a list of professors to avoid completely!

Hello Prospective,

Good luck on your decision !

If you ask me, I think you would do well either way--like they say, you cannot time the market--if you're good, you will be sought after no matter how bad the recession is.

Take care and hope to see meet you in the Spring !

BruceDragon

Thanx for your vote of confidence and you are correct about timing on the market/recession. Perhaps, if I would have had my Micro completed I would have started with you guys.

I know you guys will be so busy, and your lives will change but please if you get a few minutes here and there throughout the semester, stop by.

I would love to read about everyones' progress and the challenges that lay ahead. I'm super happy for you guys. Congrats! You all should be so proud of yourselves for entering MDC with the highest GPA's known to date. I say this cause I read several years (3-5 years ago) of MDC acceptance posts and was surprised some got accepted with 2.6gpa and above.

I would have loved to been in room with so many bright minds.

i dont want to make you feel bad but nursing school is not about straigh a.you cant get a in all the courses u mentioned before without starting 5months ahead before classes.every class has a special method of understanding.

fundamentals of nursing -u read the chapter and do nursing questions

intro to nur math-pharmacology_ pay attention to the faculty and copy and he or she writes on the board

health assesment_ same

clinicals_ do care plans as teachers tell to do it

fundamentals skills_ just observe the faculty and then practice what u observed.

on the contrary, i'm grateful that a current nursing student would take their time to reply to someone yet in ns. it's an honor. please, i welcome yourself and others to correct me or guide me in the right direction.

i agree with you. however, studying 5 months in advance in said nursing courses where more of a secondary or a bonus reason if you will for my deferral. in addition i'm trying to become an expert in a&p and other courses of the like which should will be expected and perhaps not covered in detail in ns.

my primary reason for deferring 1 semester is threefold:

1st, i realized that it was not a wise idea to take microbiology and full time nursing courses at the same time, which could impact my grades and add undue stress. and, though i have read and spoken to others who did just that, it was not a pleasant experience to say the least. in addition their grades took a hit.

2nd, by holding off until the spring semester i'm eligible to apply for the baptist scholars program, which is not being offered for the new incoming fall class. and while in the past, others have said this program is no big deal, it could and may help me get a job as soon i graduate/pass nclex. for what good is it to have a rn next to your name if one can't get hired upon graduation because the economy crisis, only demands experienced rn's and not new grads. jackson/baptist scholars grads pretty much have a job in the bag since they signed a contract saying they would work 2 years for said hospital upon graduation.

3rd, mdc currently does not currently have a honor society of nursing. actually, out of the 17 four year colleges mdc is the only one that does not have a sigma theta tau chapter. for the last several months, i have been in touch with the administrators at mdc and it appears that they would like to establish a stt or sigma chapter. and, it would be my pleasure to help pioneer it. thus, i came to the conclusion, that i not only wanted to avoid taking micro with full-time nursing classes, but i could not imagine trying to do all the preliminary footwork to get this honor society of the ground and at the end of it all not even have a job lined up.

i'm a mover and shaker. and while i agree that ns is not all about getting a's, my desire for those grades are twofold:

1st, if all i wanted was a rn degree i would not care nor sweat getting c's=continue. however, i want upper education, imagine when i apply to a grad school, who will they take first? the c student or the a? just look at how the last several years the mdc gpa min. entrance has evolved, from ~2.6 to 3.80~. and, while schools like barry will take just about anyone willing to pay $10k a semester, i would rather bank on better grades than tons of financial aid to get me trough each semester.

in addition, i plan to come back to mdc and get my bsn and if sigma is established i would like to be invited, and with all due respect to the c student, they don't get to join nor are they invited to join. it would be pretty sad if i could not join a club i helped get of the ground.

in conclusion, will i be able to accomplish all of this? i will give all my effort. i will find out and gladly accept the results. will sigma theta tau eventually have a chapter in mdc nursing? yes, sooner or later it will come. i just wish i could have a hand in it.

More bad news: according to this Miami Herald article, Jackson Memorial Hospital 'may not make payroll by 2011' if something is not done in a hurry. They are in the hole in the $Millions.

I guess I have my answer for the near future of the Jackson Scholars program. In addition, it's not looking so hot to even work there, if a new nurse could land a job there. According to the article, cuts have been made to the nursing staff where "nine nurses are doing the job of 10 in the past". I have a feeling current JMH nurses will say those ratios could even be worse.

In a more positive note, private Hospitals are doing much better. Broward Hospitals seem to doing better, including the public ones.

u r totally right jackson is not offering scholarship no more

when u arrive in nursing school de firsts words that u hear from faculties are we just do a 5percent the other 95 percent accounts on you. These are words i heard by intructor of fundamentals of nursing

I also wanted to make a note that even if you make all Cs in nursing school you can still get into grad school. They have a lesser pool of applicants and for most places all you need is your RN license to get iin (for example FIU). Most nursing school students are happy with a C because again the grades do not matter, and you can still continue your education even if you have Cs. This isn't even your regular grading scale. A C is not really a C.

i love c in nursing school because trust to get a c u got to study like for an A.

silvio, so are you saying that there is no way to fully prepare for the program before hand, so we have to actually learn from the experience? from reading your quote, it seems like we should just be attentive in class and grasp the concept, and we should be fine. everyone seems to think that c's are so customary, but i know a few people who have made most if not all a's. silvio, you even said in another post that there were only like a couple of classes that slowed you down, otherwise you made straight a's in everything else the first semester right???

asimps13, you gave us advice to get use to making c's, from your experience, is that all that was possible for you to make, or do you feel you could have tried harder; if so, what could you have done differently?

prospective, we've talked already through pm: i guess my advice didn't help! i see your final decision and of course studying in advance won't hurt at all, if anything it should only give you advantage over the other students! what ever is going to happen will happen, whether you start now or later. no one can predict what will happen in the future, and there is no time like the present. when we are blessed with an opportunity we should go for it! you would have done well, and you still will. with that said hope all is well, i will keep you posted!

am not saying to get use to c.in nursing school c stands for continuation.my point is easy to understant intructors design their test to trick you and to make you fail.now your point is to study and pass their exam if you get and 84.99 is a c.get me now answer me this question this is an actual question from class this is how instructors make thier test to make you think ,trick you and make you fail

the nurse understantds that the stestoschope is ?

1.an agent capable of causing a disease.

2.a fomite carring out micros

3.a vector waiting to be oportunistic to the susceptible host.

4.a reservoir where pathogenic microorganism grow and multiply

i didn't say you said get use to making a "c". that part of my question didn't have your name next to it. i think the person i asked that question was asimps13 not you silvio...wow!

dont worry about it o posted a question to make you view in a future what u gonna deal with. You see that teachers design their test with 2 possible answers.
