Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

This thread is for anyone who is trying to get into, currently at, or graduated from Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh!

We actually did lose alot of people! It is a tough program..........I'm assuming you are moving into Pharm and Fundamentals on Monday? I loved Pharm. I am holding a 4.0 in the 200 level classes, so you can do it if you want to! Did you just have Jamie? She is awesome......one of my favorite teachers so far. You will like Sandy in Pharm, too. Like I said, it's a hard program, but if you stick with it, when you come out of it you will be well prepared to be a nurse!

yep i am actually looking forward to it too. and you are right jamie is the best!!!! and conrats on the great GPA.... keep it up i now that you are working hard for every A you get in this program!

was thinking of transferring there from another program. do you know if they accept nursing classes from another school?

Now that is pretty tricky. they do accept recent science courses but not sure about nursing. i know a few people in my class who transferred from other nursing schools and they didnt accept them but i am not entirely sure of the reason. could be that they just dont, or that they just didnt accept those for some specific reason. your best bet would be to just call and ask.

I asked my clinical instructor today about the times for clinical changing and she said that they are not...that the only clinical that will be at different times will be the transitions course..............400 level.

hmmm. i wonder why we were told something different.... but again they are always changing things and it just may not be retroactive... who knows. i just cant imagine why we would be told this if it wasnt true. i even asked a few others to make sure i hadn't just misunderstood and they remember exactly what i stated before....

lol but as crazy as things have been since i started it would not surprise me at all if you and i both are somehow right...

:roll Hi,

You will be fine. I took it after being out of school for 12 years and did fine. It was a lot of word problems, reading comprehension and basic sciences. Things like what does a carbohydrate do? Hopefully they have not changed it since I took it.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I have my last 2 finals for this semester tonight and then I am off until May 2nd. I am in the evening weekend program.

Is the eve/wknd program 4 years? what time do your classes start? do you go everyday? do they accept in the fall semester? lots of questions, I know. Just trying to find out about different programs. I have a child and work so i'm just trying to work around all of that. thank you!

I just wanted to let those of you still waiting know that Natalie told me today that I should be getting a letter in the next 10 days and "if for some reason" I am not admitted this fall that as long as my application file is complete I will also be sent a letter telling me that I will be given top priority for consideration for spring 2010 admission. That last little part, which I didn't ask about (I just wanted to know when they were sending their letters), leads me to believe that I'm probably not in.

Has anyone else gotten their letters recently and/or heard anything else from Natalie?

The E/W program lasts 4 years. Classes usually start at 5:30 and the nursing classes last till 9:30. The college courses.......micro, a&p etc. are 3 hours long. We go 2 evenings a week and every other weekend (Fri. 5:30-9:30, Sat. and Sun 6:45-3) It's not bad....every other week we have the whole weekend off. They do accept in the Fall, but I think the testing dates are over for this upcoming Fall. So.....you wouldn't be admitted till Fall '10. unless you've already taken their test. Good luck. Shadyside is a great program.......very challenging, but also very good!

Still no letters either way, but last week was told that the fall class was full but acceptance letters had not yet been delivered to all people at that time. If I was not in the fall cut, that letters would be going out in two weeks with information about the spring.

Guessing you an me both will be hoping for spring. Myself, I may contact Mercy and see I can apply my scores from Shadyside's entrance exam to applying there for thier next full time session as well. Owned by UPMC, I would hope being sister schools that they would allow that.

I thought of that myself. One of UPMC's other schools, St. Margaret's or Mercy, does use the PSB exam. The other uses another entrance exam, I think the TEAS. Let me know what you find out, and good luck. Some part of me is still holding on to a thread of hope that I could be in for this fall at Shadyside, as could you.

I just wanted to add too that Mercy only admits in the fall.
