Anyone offer a personal opinion or story about Paragard and odd symptoms?

Hi all. I have read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" but I plan to read it again. Long story short, I can NOT take any hormones whatsoever and I'm allergic to latex. I am using the Paragard IUD right now, have had it in for about 10 months. My first Paragard was coming out during my follow-up checkup, so this is my second one. I can never feel the strings, but at my last appt my doctor saw them and so everything is fine. I hated the IUD the first 5 months because I always bled...but everything had been normal from December-April.

Ok, My daughter is 15 months old now but I still breastfeed occasionally. I decided to start charting my temperatures, so that when I remove the IUD in a year or 2 we can be prepared to conceive our 2nd.

Now for the question: My period was 6 days late this month. :( It's here now, like everything is normal, but when I took my BBT temperature this morning I was shocked. My temp is 98.4!! (Fahrenheit) I charted for several months before my daughter's conception and I only had such high temperatures during my luteal phase and pregnancy.

I woke up half an hour later than usual this morning, it's a brand new thermometer (a BBT thermometer instead of regular one) and I had stomach problems last night before bed. I thought maybe I ate something...I took my temperature 3 times, and it was 98.4, 98.3,98.4.

I wanted to start charting the first day of my period, but I had to wait for my new thermometer to come in as my other one died..so now I am day 4..so maybe that is causing the mess up?

I guess I am just being paranoid. My SIL has 2 friends pregnant with Paragard, my lab partner just gave birth and she had the Paragard during her conception. Than another friend had some infection from her IUD!!!

I realize that nobody can offer medical advice here, but I am just wondering if anyone has personal advice, similar stories, experiences that they could share. I am considering taking this thing out, but I don't know what to do about birth control. I know that the Natural Family Planning will work, but it does take a few months of detailed charting to be reliable.

Thanks for any input!

If this is your first temp with the BBT, I would give it a full cycle in order to see what your baseline and trends are. I assume you took it as soon as you woke up, before getting out of bed or moving around? Did you drink any alcohol last night? Was your bedroom warmer than usual this morning?

I decided to start charting at the beginning of what was supposed to be my cycle. I expected my period so I began charting, first thing in the morning, the thermometer is right beside my bed. I know during my period last month my temperatures were 97.4, 97.4, 97.6, 97.3...(I fell off the bandwagon of charting after that)

I expected my period May 25th, my temp was 98.1...I charted for 4 mornings waiting for my period...it was 98.1, 98.2, 98.1, 98.1..my thermometer died so I ordered one from Amazon with 2 day shipping. My period started the day I ordered it...got my thermometer yesterday. I figured I would start charting during my period and stick with it all month. It was 98.4 this morning.

I did take a dollar tree pregnancy test the day of my original missed period and it was negative. I'm not really concerned about pregnancy because I am bleeding. But I do worry about infection primarily! I'm going to see what happens with this period, and call my doc if I keep feeling worried.

These matters are things you should be discussing with your Ob/gyn. If you don't get the answers you need there, you might be able to contact someone from Planned Parenthood. It's important that you see someone who will take your history and be willing to advise you on an ongoing basis. Internet opinions on such an important topic may be contradictory, incomplete or just plain wrong. For that reason, giving or asking for medical advice is against the Terms of Service for AN.
