Anyone know about Richmond University Medical Center in Stanten Island?

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi,

I have an interview scheduled for this one and Stanten Island University Hospital. Anyone has any idea about this hospital?

Looks like Richmond University hospital is hiring new Grads now, I saw lots of posting for RN in their website.

Thanks for any information about these 2 hospitals!

Heh. That's the old Staten Island Hospital, which I remember when it was an 1800's building that looks like a castle on - wait for it - Castleton Avenue. It's still there, right above Jersey Street. Bad street, Jersey Street.

It had a decent reputation for care. A few years ago they affiliated themselves with I think (and I'm guessing here) Cornell. I have heard nurses complain a lot about teaching hospitals and new physicians.

It's big.

Oh, and Richmond University was St Vincent's, I think. On Castleton Avenue?

Both of my aunts were there recently, at the same time on the same floor. Oy. The care was wonderful.

Specializes in acute care.

Does anyone know: Is richmond university medical center far from the Ferry by bus?

Specializes in SICU, MICU, CICU, NeuroICU.

I work at RUMC as a unit clerk. I am also in school and we do our clinicals there. I personally love the hospital. I love the people there, and the atmosphere. Everyone says hi and whatnot.

RUMC is a teaching hospital and you will learn a lot there. However, sadly enough, there are a few downsides. One, the hospital is not fully computerized yet (but they're working on it, we set to get a new computer system in Jan), and they really don't do anything more than angiography for the heart. There's no MRI machine and patient's have to go across the street to have one done.

The starting salary is pretty good and it's comparable to most other hospitals in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

From the Ferry, it's a short trip on either two buses. The s44 and the s46. The walk is slightly shorter on the s46 because it leaves you on the corner of the hospital, but the s44 might be a shorter trip from the ferry.

I highly recommend RUMC. I know that SIUH only hires new grads for 8hr shifts and you get 12hr shifts after one year.

Anymore questions let me know.

My wife was born there. I wish I could have seen it in it's prime. Unfortunately I'm too young. Along with Bayley Seton. That's where our classes are held. That is truly an amazing facility and I wish I could have seen that hospital in it's prime also. I usually go walking around the areas that are off-limits when we have breaks. Cool stuff. Too bad they're tearing it down to build an active living community. Truly a shame.

That was the US Public Health Hospital campus when I was a child, and my grandparents lived across the street on Vanderbilt Avenue when is was a really nice, sleepy little town. The post office there was a Safeway, and the development next to it was a woods where an old Italian-American guy kept chickens. And there was no mall, so the little Stapleton shopping area (now replete with an OTB and methadone clinic) was a thriving shopping center.

I could go on about that neighborhood.
