Anyone know what is going on with kaplan's online adn program

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I have been researching Kaplan University's onling ADN program that is available in South Florida... I have done all of the work to be accepted into the program which was to start March 2009, now I get a phone call that the class has suppossedly been moved to a new start date of June 2009. They told me bc the Florida Board dictates when they can start classes, but they have also told me that I am not guaranteed a seat in the program yet and that everything is on hold.

I am just curious if anyone has heard anything or if they are in the same boat as myself? Also if anyone has heard anything about the program?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!!

oh...ok. Thanks for the heads up. If you hear anything please let me know. I will do the same.

Hi

Yes no problem.. thanks so much for your information. Have a good day!!!

If one does not already possess at least an LPN license, then there are usually many issues associated with programs that are done on-line and the majority of them do not meet licensure requirements for all states.

Would you want a nurse caring for you that did their degree on-line that has no nursing experience behind them in the first place? This will be the response of quite a few other states as well.

-------------------------

If you read what was posted here, they still do not know if they are going to be able to start the program there in the first place. Also looks like Florida BON has not given their approval on it as well; and if they do not, then that means no licensure in Florida or anyplace else.

No state is going to accept a program that is offered but not recognized by the BON in the state where it is being offered either.

Hi

The program has been in existence since dec 2007 and it is recognized by the Florida BON. The program is provisional and when I asked the BON they stated that this was strictly bc it was a new program and that until enough students would take and pass the NCLEX the provosional status would not go to full status.

The program is not entirely online. Your classes (theory, etc) are online. You must attend clinicals each week. It really is no different from the program here at the CC. At the CC you are able to take the class protion online and then the skills lab and clinicals are done at the local hospitals. So it is really the same type of program minus the long wait of the CC.

The program is still provisional, that never guarantees that a program will become fully accredited or accepted in every single state.

And this is the point that I am trying to make.

-------------------------

But if there are issues with funding, then it is also a big problem for many since it is a private program.

any new info with this program?

Anyone starting in February

Hi,

I am new to everything...this site and career as a nurse. However I have done tons and tons of research. While I have found very little on KAPLAN's ADN program, it is not yet nationally accredited however it is recognized by FL BON. With that said, you are still eligible to take the NCLEX RN exam.

I applied to the program and still awaiting on my acceptance letter with a start date of 9/22/2010. What I do know is that all your classes are online however all practicum work, clinicals, etc are done in a nearby lab/hospital etc on WEEKENDS only. A MUST be a resident of South FL. (Palm beach, Broward, Miami-Dade counties)

While Kaplan ADN does not have a waiting list, all applicants are review by board - Admission rep told me this is because they are trying to achieve high-possible passing rates on NCLEX so the program gets 100% National Accred..etc..

This program is excellent for me for several reasons. I work fulltime 9-6 M-F therefore with clinicals on weekends, and online classes, it allows me to complete the program. Yes, I'll be exhausted but I am academically prepared. I chose to go for my RN degree, not only because its been a passion of mine to do for many years but in all honesty, I've held several management positions at a few fortune 500 companies, and I am so over the cheating, lies, dishonesty, lack of integrity and "ponzi schemes" of stealing people's hard-earned money, within corporate America. (personal opinion)

While I realize the whole medical/health care is also a big political topic now, at least, I will know at the end of the day my 1-on-1's with my patients will mean more to me than anything else. And my career as RN will take me all over the world.

Anyone with more information etc or who's actually in Kaplan ADN program, would greatly appreciate any feedback and or help information!!

I am currently in the program and will answer any questions you have. Also, there were people in my program from Orlando and Tennessee.

Hi PrincessO

Are you currently attending KU ADN? Can you tell me how it works as far as clinicals (I know its weekends). But how long are they...8 hour days? At hospitals? Are there lab simulations...etc....... I'm curious about the A&P courses, do they have lab assignments like on-campus colleges?

My only concern is the school's ADN accreditation....have you heard anything new about it being nationally recognize...are we as KU ADN students eligible to take NCLEX without issues (contingent on criminal-background etc)

There are students from out of state? That's interesting as they made it clear that I live in So Fla since clinicals are done here....not that it matters anyway.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

hi,

i am not really sure about a & p as i was able to transfer in the max classes. i believe there are lab components at the pembroke pines location. pharmacology does have a lab component at the pembroke pines location. the lab component consists of simulations, lecture, discussions, and math exams. the clinical are on sat or sun only from 7-3:30 or 8-4 at hospitals mainly in the boca raton area. there are also weekly assignments, quizzes, virtual clinical excursions, kaplan review exams, care plans, research papers etc... in my opinion we have more weekly assignments than tradition classes because they are trying to make up for time usually spent in a traditional class. no matter what school you go to every online class seems to be that way.

i would not worry about accreditation for nclex purposes. they are accredited, but not for the adn because it's new; there bsn has full accreditation. you will still be able to get your rn license in the state of florida. they did apply for accreditation and once they get an 85 %( don't quote me) pass rate they will become accredited. your concern with accreditation comes when it is time to transfer credits for a bsn program as most program will only accept credits from an accredited school. however, if you have another degree from an accredited school with all the general ed courses complete you will not run into that problem because most schools want an rn license with general ed courses completed from an accredited school. i have two bachelor degrees with all my general ed courses including a & p completed at an accredited school so i should not run into that problem. in worse case scenario you could always transfer to kaplan's bsn program if you are planning to go for your masters at a non commercialized-private school.

**** thanks princesso for the information! this definitely help. with you bringing over your a&p classes did that make the program shorter for you? how long does it normally takes? i was able to bring over some of my undergrad general ed courses as i have both an aa and bs degree from accredited colleges. however classes such as a&p will be knew although i have take chemistry, physics and calculus (was once an engineer major).

you are on point with online classes because i did 100% of my bs degree online and i stayed busy. it wasn't hard or impossible but you stayed busy!!!!

funny, us news reported like 2 weeks ago that nurses are starting to have issues finding a job (can you believe it after all these years where nursing is always in demand). have read several threads where some nurses with exp in south fla have sent out several resumes and are unable to get a job? are you hearing anything about this or do you worry about it being an issue after graduation?
