Anyone gone from ADN to BSN online?

or in an accelerated program?

I'm just curious as to what your experience was, if you'd recommend it, if it's opened up more doors in your career, etc.

I'm currently in an ADN program, and am looking ahead to the future. I hear day in and out how I'll be so much better off with the BSN, so I want to start looking to that option. Unfortunately, there aren't many options in my area, except for an online option - which I'm not necessarily opposed to.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject! Thank you!!!

I just finsished my 1st online RN-BSN course and it is not bad. Way more $$ than universities(some) but convienence is a big plus. I read assignments, view lectures and write papers, same as any other course. Check back with me in a year....

I'm finishing up University of Phoenix online ADN to BSN in May 04 - yeah! I've done it in 18 months - pretty quickly actually. I've been very happy with it and they are accredited also. Will be going right into the MSN program.

i too went to uop -- msn in 2001. the tuition is steeper, but once you figure in mileage, wear and tear on vehicle, time spent away from family, not having to be at "scheduled" class--i think it was well worth it. i especially liked the autonomy it gave me to work, have family time, and do my coursework whenever i wanted as long as i met the due dates. i think a person has to be more disciplined than in a regular classroom setting, since there's no one hanging over your shoulder. the support i got from instructors, etc. via email was excellent. i give the overall experience an "a". i am very hoh and this was much more suitable than trying to strain to get the info in a classroom setting. plus, i'm one of those who do better when left to my own devices! i'd recommend it to you.:)

Thanks for the info you guys! Would any of you mind telling me what type of courses you've taken? ARe they gen ed type courses, or all science courses? I've checked out a couple schools, but they can't show me the actual classes that are involved in the program. I think I could handle social science type classes online before I could handle physics or bio-organic chem, ya know?

Hi Michelle - I am also with UoP and love the online format. Like other posters have said, the flexibility is great, but you need to be motivated to ensure that you meet the class and project deadlines. I had to take some gen ed classes, but they were not bad. As far as clinical is concerned, there are several clinical courses, but you can take some of them with your current employer. That is why you must hold and unrestricted RN license and be employed to attend UoP. So far, it has worked out for me really well and the course content is very relevent and up-to-date for practicing RN's ... the professors are working professionals and have some really great backgrounds, both in education and on the floor. Many of the UoP instructors are still working in their respective clinical areas. It is a good decision, especially if you have family obligations are just need to work full time while going to school.

Some of the classes I've taken for the ADN to BSN at UofP:

Critical thinking

Theory of porfessional nursing

health assessment

health and disease management

concepts of family nursing theory

issues/strategies of research

stats

the dreaded 6 hours of math

Its a great way to do it if going to a traditional school isn't your cup of tea. Good luck...

What was your math like. Sciences I can do, but I have discalcua, can't do algebra with a graphing calculator. What maths did you take and what were they like?

Hi Michelle,

I'm in a RN-BSN fast track program at University of St. Francis online. i like it, but I do miss the face to face interaction, but not the driving to and from school.

It's worth checking out, but it's not cheap. I wanted to stay in school once I finished my ADN but now I wish I'd waiting a while longer before starting a new program. JMO.

I was fortunate in that I had already taken my math requirement at the community college where I earned my ADN. If you are not math inclined, it might be worth the time to take the course at your local CC rather than taking it online. This way you get more 1:1 help. Good Luck. Patrick :)
