Anyone Getting a Nurse Externship Now That the Semester is Over?

Published

Hi everyone! I only have finals week left, then i completed my very first semester of nursing boot camp, opps I mean nursing school!:) :balloons: :) I'm so excited. Anyway, I also have an interview tomorrow at 10:00am to be a nurse extern/pool pca at a local trauma 1 center in the city. I'm nervous because this will be my very first job not in retail~! I have been working retail everyday since I was 15 and now I'm 24 and getting my first paid job in a hospital. I'm just still in shock that I have come so far(I know I have a long ways to go). I just hope I am doing the right thing and am not rushing anything. Some friends are not getting externships till the summer because they are afraid of not studying enough but i work now for $9.25 an hour, I could actually work less hours now for 14.00 plus differential. I just hope I'm doing the right thing for me. I have very limited support emotionally~ so I knew I could ask everyone here...Thank you :)

I start my externship Wednesday..Im so excited..we get to schedule our own hours while school is in and they schedule us the other times..I just want to say good luck to everyone :)

hi everyone! thanks for all the great replies! I had to wait awhile to see if I was chosen. I was offered the job as Student Nurse Extern at $15.95 an hour! Now all I have to do is pass the physical and blood tests and the tox screen (which I will!!:chuckle) and I can start orientation on January 10-15. I have to relearn all my skills according to this hospital plus I get to be trained in Phlebotomy, EKG/ECG, and a bunch of other stuff even the nurses at my school's hospital do not do...(very nervous!) anyway I'm only responsible to work 16 hours weekend a month and next year I have to work either Christmas or New Year's plus one summer holiday (im pushing for arbor day??)if I'm still here...!! Good Luck to everyone else!

Congratulations BabyNurseBSN2006!:balloons: That sounds great! I was just curious to where you live, that seems like a pretty nice wage for a nurse tech. I wonder if that includes the differential for working weekends. Again, congratulations!

Hi, I was wondering,as I am trying to get a job in a hospital as a pca, did you have to apply on line to the hospital? In Detroit, where I am from, you have to apply inline to apply for jobs. If you have to do that too where you live at, what did you do to insure that you even got an interview? I have applied to the hospital online, and have never been called back. I am not currently a nursing student, but I am still taking pre reqs. Anyone that has any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Oh, I have been trained to give EKG's, venipunctures, injections, and other invasive procedures.

We don't do our school sponsored externships until the summer - after we've had 2 semesters of Med Surg.

Hi mccnrs2b1, I live in Philadelphia and I will be at one of the Trauma I centers here. Where are you from? We have so many wonderful and different types of hospitals within a 20 mile radius that the competition for quality externs is very high. I talked to a lot of the recruiters and they say that they want to get and keep the externs because a vast majority say on when they get their BSN. The lowest pay I have seen is 14.00 for a community hospital and the highest was 17.00 for LTC in the boonies. *Giada~As for the internet thing, all the hospitals out here have that but I went right to the source and called the recruiting office. I don't trust where it might end up. I recommend calling and tell them that you are a nursing student(or will be~out here they only take current BSN students for this pay rate) and are interested in any programs that they have to further your education. It works wonders. * Also the job I have is 16 hours weekend mandatory a month so I think the differential is already built in. Good Luck!
