has anyone ever been a nurse intern?

Published

Today I just found out that I recieved a positon at a hospital for a nurse intern and I'm so excited:yeah: but also very nervous. I dont know what to expect! Will I get a lot of experience or will it be more like a cna position. I need some info...oh and I'll be on ortho/neuro... Someone please help!

Specializes in ER, progressive care.

Chances are you will be doing a lot of the same things an RN can do, only under RN supervision.

I used to work at The Cleveland Clinic and they had nurse externs. These externs were still in nursing school but did everything an RN could do except for pass meds.

It depends. At some facilities in my area nurse externs/techs as nothing more then CNA/Unit Secs with a fancier title and a few more dollars an hour. Others allow you to preform "checked" skills under an RN. I recommend you ask about job duties before you accept the position.

It really depends of your state’s nurse practice act. I’m going to be a nurse intern in Iowa this summer so I can tell you how it is for me. I have to be enrolled in a class at a college in order to be able to do procedures (IVs, NGs, Foleys) and pass meds. I will have a one on one RN preceptor that I will work under the entire time. Yes the class costs me almost $700, but the internship is paid, and I will be able to do RN stuff and very little CNA stuff. The other internship in town would be better money wise but all you do is “observe” and practice as a CNA if you have a CNA license. Like woahmelly said, make sure you know your duties before you accept. Good luck!
