anyone else a new grad nurse from spring 2009 and no job?

Published

Hi all, I would like to know I am not the only one still without a job after graduating almost a year ago. is there anyone else in the same boat?

Specializes in Pediatrics.

You are not alone!

I graduated from BC in May '09, relocated 3000 miles away from home, have not been able to find any RN jobs (hospitals, ltcs, md offices, etc.), and am now considering relocating back home to Boston or to random cities that might have jobs for new grads (Houston, DC, Nashville, Chapel Hill, Atlanta). On top of that, now recruiters are telling me I'm an 'old grad'/less desirable than a 'newer' grad, and are skeptical of out-of-staters because they don't know how long I'll stay before relocating back to where I came from. Great.

Please, someone just give us new grads a chance!

Hey BKC, where are you at? I ask because I graduated from BC in '08 and am currently in LA, and I can't think of where else you could be after moving 3000 miles. Sorry you're having troubles, wherever you are :(

Specializes in Foot care.

Yes, I'm in this boat, graduated May 09 from a Massachusetts college, have a BSN.

It's quite discouraging to know the wave of '10 graduates is approaching. I made the mistake of being involved in school my senior semester, not working as a PCT or CNA or something-in-a-hospital while going to school, and then I took a vacation and had a medical problem get in my way.

Then, when starting to look for a job, I relied very heavily on Monster, Indeed, USAjobs, for a few months, and am now working off a list of Massachusetts hospitals: http://www.massmedboard.org/links/hospital_list.shtm. I occasionally see interesting ads on Craigslist. I find the interview process difficult, though I've only been on two interviews. I can't relocate, but have started to look further afield; thinking if I can find a job, I will live where my job is while I'm working and come home on my days off.

Just heard about an event for job hunting, networking and CEUs: http://www.healthcarereview.com/. It's in Manchester NH, April 6. You can get 6 CEUs from 4 workshops, I forget the costs but it's reasonable, maybe even very reasonable. There's also a resume advisor too.

Very discouraged.

thank you for sharing your stories, i will check out the two websites you listed. good to us all!

Haha, I meant to change that measurement after I posted. I'm actually in LA (the state), New Orleans to be exact. Although, sometimes it feels like I'm 3000 miles away from home. Always good to hear from another BC Eagle :)

I too am patiently waiting. I graduated in May of 2009 with my BSN but I have been working at a hospital as a CNA since Oct 2008. Even with being a nurses aid on an inpatient floor at a major hospital in Boston, I STILL CANT GET A JOB! :crying2:

There are a good handful of CNA's with their RN license waiting to get that big promotion one day here but times are tough and they cant afford to hire us...so good luck to all of those externally applying...cuz even with me being in the system its tough out there....

Try to get ANYTHING! I graduated Dec 09 and, while its not my dream job, I'm working in a pediatrics office. What about VNA?
