well, today is our second biggie test over three chapters. i have had so many problems with the chapter over the "cells". i get so confused on this stuff. our teacher wants us to be able to describe how the cell works like a city. i can't remember the stuff. i only pray that i know enough to pass this today. one part of the test is over the body systems and organs, and the other part is over the skin. i'm not to worried about either of these, just the cells. everyone have a great day!!
write it out and memorize it.
break it down organelle by organelle what each function is the main characteristics. review some websites and test yourself, it will become second nature to you after a while but you have to grasp the basics to move on.
my text book has a great website with it that anyone can access maybe this will help you, if you got to the top of the page where it says "essential study partner" there are lots of exercises to walk you thru different topics such as cells.ap102 msjc
What I did was I drew the cell over and over and over again with pencil crayons for colors. Under each diagram label I wrote the function of that part of the cell. I then went on to make flashcards with each part drawn on the front and the function on the back. By the time I was done with the flascards, I didn't need them anymore, it was already in my head. I also wanted to point out that if you are in A&P I, maybe you are learning more about epithelial cells as oppose to say a Golgi Apparatus or Rough ER....and honestly that part was tricky for me but I did the same thing, drew them over and over again that now I'm in A&P II and honestly it's like riding a bike, I still know it all but keep in mind that the beginning is tough. You will eventually find it to be a piece of cake, I promise!
And like prmenrs said the picture thing (for me was in relation to drawing it) does help, picturing it in a mental map is good for memorizing.
To the OP, I think your teacher is onto something. My teacher taught us the same way, and it helped me to understand the responsibilities of each organelle. You already know that each has its own metabolic function. Golgi apparatus does the packaging, ribosomes for protein synthesis, mitochondria for ATP production, and so on. Think about each organelle as a worker in a factory. It really helped me to understand. I took that test over two weeks ago, and I still remember everything. If you are more of a visual learner, study the pictures and think of the job description of each organelle. Hope this helps you.

Here are a few websites about the cell that may be helpful.

I'm currently in A & P 1 but I took Cell Biology last term and these sites were helpful.
Good luck!
Many thanks for all the replies. You know, when I looked at the test, I remembered the cell parts. I dreamed about those things! I did start to think of them like a city. The lysomes were garbage trucks cleaning up the streets, thinks like that and it really did help! I believe I passed the test though I think I missed a few questions. Lots of great ideas from you all.
Blessings to all!
