Anyone else going to an ADN pgm w/ BA already?

Published

Hello There:

I just found out this week I passed my COMPASS math (hooray!!) so I can start my pre-reqs this summer. I am really happy about it, but a little discouraged after meeting w/ the counselor. I feel like I have so many hoops to jump thru! I have my BA in psych and almost a dual degree in bio as well, and I have to take 3 classes over as they are too old. :o I understand completely, I'll make a better nurse if my info is more current, but I got A's in 2 of them...sigh. I just feel like its going to take forever! I know in the end it will be OK. I have 2 kids, and for me, being a SAHM for the last 5 yrs, I know putting my little guy (he's 22 mos)in full time daycare at this point would kill me, but still...I'm inpatient!!! I will finish my clinicals right before my DS starts Kindergarten, and I really didn't plan on working full-time until everyone was in school, but I guess I just needed to vent. Anyone else feeling this too? There are some great BSN pgms around me, that would probably allow me to start clinicals sooner, but w/ a family and debt already from my undergrad, I just think ADN is financially the only thing. Plus both of those schools offer rn-msn pgms which I plan to persue. Anyway..thanks for listening! Good luck to everyone waiting to hear and waiting on tests!!!

That New Orleans program sounds great - but you do have a personal interview and have to sign away your life for 2 years - I wonder what they charge? I live in Indiana and there are no programs like that here.

Hi,

I don't know where in Indiana you are though but, there are at least three accelerated programs like that I know of in Chicago, Loyola, Rush and DePaul.

Good luck.

I already have a BA degree, but have decided the 2 year adn route was worth it for me....First off, it is alot cheaper than the accelerated route (7g vs. 30g) secondly, it will allow me more time with my 10 month old daughter & husband...you are not alone!! :)

I have a BA in Health Care Administration. I'm currently in an ADN program and only had to take A&P I and II, and Micro before I could enter the program. I thought about an accelerated program for 2nd degree candidates, but I thought it was way too intense. I'd rather have time to actually absorb the information rather than race through it at warp speed. I am definitely happy with my decision.

I majored in Social Work the first time around waaaay back in the 1980's.

When I decided to become a nurse, the BSN program was too far away and the ADN program nearby. I did some pre-req's one class at a time that were mostly science since I had already taken everything else before. I did get credit for high school chemistry!!

I waited until my kids were all in school fulltime and was a SAHM . .my youngest was in 1st grade when I started nursing school. I was 38 at that time. Graduated when I was 40. It was still very difficult.

I now have a 3 year old, a 15 year old, a 20 year old and a 22 year old and I can tell you that the old adage TIME FLIES is very true. I'm only working part-time now and my 3 year old goes to my inlaw's ranch on the days I work. I wouldn't work full-time for anything. Kids grow up fast. Enjoy them.

Good luck and best wishes.

Hello to a fellow NC-ian!

I have a BFA in Art Education and am going back for an ADN. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to convince anyone that my art classes really should count as a chemistry credit.... It's been a pretty big leap from right brain to left, but I love it so far.

I'm currently begging the mailman for a letter of acceptance from the local hospital school and am taking pre-req's and classes while waiting out the way-too-long-waiting list at the local community college as a backup. I have looked into UNC, but am not really interested in a BSA. I am considering their RN-to-MSN program for later.

For me, school has been quite a bit more enjoyable the second time around... maybe it's due to having a house and a husband instead of a dorm full of friends and parties that HAD to be attended! Ha! I had no idea how much work all that extracurricular stuff was!

Sounds like you're in the same 'hood-- What programs are you considering?

Good Luck!

Hey there! I am looking at Wake Tech and UNC. I think I'd rather pay less, but we'll see! I took some classes at DTCC, near you, I think, but WTCC is closer :) Actually I had a really good mtg w/ the head nursing admiss. counselor at WTCC, she will accept my a&p 1 so I have to take just about 4 classes before I can start. That's not too bad. If I can get in, I'll start some prereqs this summer, otherwise fall. I think its hardest to get in classes the first time ( you're bottom of the list). As for wait time, its a weighted admissions process, you get points for classes. The science classes are more heavily weighted and A's get you more points. If you came in w/ 3 classes from another school, and had all A's, for example, you may start the 'wait list' w/ say 60 points. I get the impression somewhere btwn 130-175 points gains you clinical admission, so if a person was able to take all prereqs at one time, and get A's, they'd get in faster than someone who was taking fewer classes and getting b/cs.

Anyway, I know what you mean about enjoying this more the 2nd time around! I am so much more settled (no more drama :) and able to focus on my class work. The same boat as you, hubby and a house Sounds weird, I know, I have 2 kids, but I plan on starting clinicals when my DS is 3 1/2 or 4, and my DD wil be 8.

Are you looking at watts? I've heard good things about it...good luck! I also am thinking of rn-msn later..maybe neonatal NP at Duke, who knows?! tell me how your progress goes!!!

Don't live near Chicago - but the cost of living there is way to expensive - those colleges are way over priced too.
