Anyone Certified As An Epic Analyst?

Specialties Informatics

Published

I am going to the Epic Corp soon to start working on my certification for the Epic System. I have been working as an Epic Analyst/Trainer for a short time, and no one in our group has their certification yet. The agency I worked with was small, and they have recently been bought out by a large health system.

The new health system has offered to send us to WI. for the certification, and we should start in the next month or so. We have been told it is a four part process, but very little else.

Is there someone who has been thru the process, who could tell me more?

Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this process.

Greetings Labella,

That is correct you either need to work for an organization that has the Epic product on site or for the vendor - Epic in order to receive training and certification in the product.

To my knowledge in order to obtain certification in a particular vendor's product (like Epic) you would need to be employeed by an organization that is willing to pay for and send you for the training. Hospitals, and other healthcare organizatins send their project managers, analysts, and other's you have roles within the organization currently building, testing or in some way working with or planning to work with the vendor product. I have never heard of an independent clinician or person obtaining Epic certification.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I am interested in getting Epic certified. I understand from another forum that one either has to be employed by Epic or work for a hospital that uses Epic to get trained. Have you heard anything different?

Thanks you!

Angela is absolutely correct! You can not obtained Epic Certification on your own, nor can you maintain that certification. A NVT ( New Version) recert is required each year to maintain your Epic Certification, and you must still be employed by or working for an agency that supplies Contractors to Epic Clients.

Certification requires that you have access to Epic's Client website and ISWTD playground in order to obtain training info, and complete required "projects" depending on the training you are working on.

It took me almost a year to complete my Ambulatory Certification, and less than 6 six months to complete ASAP ED Cert. For me the projects were killers, but there are those who breeze right thru the requirements.

I am a builder which I totally love, and do integrated testing which I do not love, but it is all part of the implementation process. I LOVE this position and thank God daily for the opportunity I have been given

Well I have finally gained certification as an ASAP ED Dept Epic Analyst, and it was a very difficult path for me. But one more exam to pass and I am will have my second certification as an Epic Ambulatory Analyst, and I am loving every day I work.

Last month I finally received my Epic Ambulatory Certification, and still loving my position with an awesome healthcare system! The only stress I have ever had in this position was passing these certifications! I am hoping next year to become certified in Clin Doc and OpTime

Thank you Angela! This is my second EPIC certification, and I am so glad to be done :)! At least for now.

Hi PeggyCA10RN,

I can tell you a lot about making the transition from the bedside to an EPIC application analyst. The company I work for is ramping up for a big EPIC implementation. If you want to talk to someone about that, you can email me at

Gilian posting private e-mail addresses on the forum is not allowed.

Peggy please private message Gillian instead

Thanks

I'n not Epic certified, but I found this article about Epic to be very interesting:

I would like to inquire where to apply to be a nurse informatics/epic certified nurse?

HI Gillian0221,

I am really interested in nursing informatics/ epic application analyst, though am in nursing management right now. I don't know how and where to begin.

Hi Gillian0221,

Hope you can tell me where to apply to be an epic application analyst. I am really very interested but don't know where to start.

Thanks

I'm not Gillian, but if the hospital you're working at doesn't have epic implemented or projects going, one way to 'get in' is to scour job boards looking for hospitals that are looking for rn's trying to make a switch into epic implementations; in the past there have been postings from hospitals looking for rns with no experience wanting to get into epic implementations. I must tell you though, those come like once a year---if they come at all.

Of course, another way is to inquire through your friends if hospitals in your area have epic, and if so, you might want to find out who their project manager is, or the person in charge of hiring for the project, and then go talk to them and see if they got any openings....

The easiest way of course, is when your hospital has an implementation going on,because then you can volunteer to be a superuser, or volunteer for anything else going on;

When I switched from clinical nursing to informatics, I spent 8 months going to hospitals, submitting resumes, networking with my friends and I had experience working at a large IT company; i just didn't have the clinical IT experience implemeting projects at hospitals, but I had implemented projects for non health care related companies. Even then, it took me that long to find a job, but my persistence finally paid off.

FYI you only need to post the same question once.

In answer to your questions. The best way to get a job as an Epic analyst is to go straight to the source -- Epic. The other alternative is to apply for an open position with a hospital that is looking to fill such a position.

Nursing Informatics is not synonymous with being an "Epic Analyst". Is there some reason that even though you have no nursing informatics, clinical informatics, healthcare information systems experience but you "want to be an Epic analyst/Nurse Informaticist"? You may want to investigate exactly what being an analyst (Epic, McKesson, Meditech analyst) or an Informatics Nurse means.

Related to your interest in Nursing Informatics and "where to begin" I'd suggest doing some research on the specialty.

Try starting with the ANA/ANCC website and using the search term: Nursing Informatics, try searching the web using the same search term, purchase a nursing informatics text and learn about the specialty, join your local NI organization and learn and network; read the numerous posts on this forum and learn about the specialty; contact an experienced Informatics Nurse and ask to be mentored; take a look at the websites of ANIA (the American Nursing Informatics Association) and AMIA-NIWG (the American Medical Informatics Association - Nursing Informatics Work Group) to learn more about the specialty. If you do not know how to contact your local NI organization, pm me or e-mail me and tell me what state you live in and I can provide you with contact info.

Good Luck!
