Anyone attending/attended GTCC in Jamestown?

Published

I am a pre-Surgical Tech student there, taking Psych this summer but starting a full-time year in the fall. I was wondering specifically if anyone has had any experience with the A&P or Microbiology instructors, who to avoid, who is a good teacher...I have heard scary rumors that the science dept. was told to be particularly hard on the pre-nursing/allied health students!

I want to begin my program with the best possible foundation. I am in school to learn as much as I can, not looking to just skate by, but I don't want to end up in a class with a prof who had been specifically instructed to make my life he** for the semester.

This fall is just Intro to Bio (BIO 110), but I have to take the other sciences in the spring/summer.

Thanks for any advice for a newbie!

I completed AP I&II there last year and it was fine. In no way did I *ever* get the impression that the instructors were out to get us!

In fact, I truly enjoyed the classes and thought the instructors were passionate about the subject. I also appreciated that the same ones led my lab sections, so all instruction was reinforcing. I had to work to get my A's, but it was sooooo much better than I had expected!

Hey, thanks! Look at the date, I posted that like over two months ago, I never thought I'd see a reply!

Thanks so much for the insight. I have actually done just fine, I LOVE my Bio 110 instructor. I think she's new this semester. Anyway, she will be teaching A&P I next semester, so I can register for her section. I have also heard XXXXX lecture, and he seems just as passionate as you say.

I hope your school is going well, are you done yet?

Thanks again for the reply...what a shocker!

Hey, I took A & P at GTCC last year (and Bio 111). It was hard work, but the profs. were very supportive and helpful outside of class. I'm in a nursing school now (not GTCC) and took adv. physio. over the summer - I'd say, I was a little weak in my physio. background compared to others. But I feel very good about my experience at GTCC.

Thanks for the advice! I will be taking A&P this spring, so I'll keep that in mind and do a little extra physiology reading just for myself, as I plan to possibly pursue either a Bachelors' in Biology or nursing school after I finish my 2yr Surgical Technology degree. i am having no trouble at all in BIO 110, so that's a good sign. :)

Good luck in nursing school!

Good luck as well!

I am applying for 2010 at GTCC in Jamestown night and weekend program. I have a full time job till 3 3 days a week and till 5 one day a week. No onee can give me a straight answer as to if this is possible for me with my work schedule. I will have all gen ed classes finished when I start. I will only be taking nursing courses. HELP HELP . Any one GRADUATE FROM THE NIGHT AND WEEKEND CLASS??????????:nurse::nurse::banghead::banghead:

I am starting the program in January and I got the same run around. I have five kids so for me it was essential to know when I would be going to class and doing clinicals, so I asked around campus (yes, I am sure I looked crazy) until I found someone who actually attended the program. She said that once she had to be there before 5pm for a class and one semester over the summer she had to do clinicals from 4-8pm. She said some got clinicals that were early like that each time. I don't know if that helps you but I thought what the heck, I am going to go for it. The first semester will be a class that starts at 5pm one day a week. I will update when I get my scheudal. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

I don't know if this is of any help. but I know that some schools, including GTCC, try very hard to get clinical sites that will accomodate evening students. The reality is, however, that the schools are at the mercy of the clinical sites, to some extent. I am in the Surgical Tech program there, and it is only a daytime, full-time program. I think a big reason for this is that ORs do not run scheduled procedures into the evening hours. All our clinicals are done in main ORs of local hospitals, so we are stuck with a 630-230 clinical schedule whether we like it or not.

If there are not enough facilities willing to precept students after 5pm, then some clinical hours have to be done earlier, or they won't get done at all. Makes it hard for a working mom to get it done, but somehow we usually manage someway or another. It's what we do *sigh* Just my .02

Thanks so much for your insight mom25. I am so torn on whether to apply for 2010 or wait till 2011. Don't know if you know this but the state changed the curriculum starting 2010. I am not sure it will really change the classes, however a few general education classes and prereq's changed. You now have to be a CNA first. One of the directors said she is not sure how it will affect the class schedule. I actually would be great to have most classes to start at 5 or after and on weekends. The four o clock ones would be a disruption to my work schedule. I am a dental hygienist and the only one in my practice and I see pts till 3. (not supposed to really leave the office till 4). I just wish someone had better answers around the school. It is hard to tell when clinicals are but other classes should be easier to feel out. I looked online at the current class schedule and most of the classes looked to me to start at 4.

Anyhow enough about me. Do you have any gen ed classes already? The only ones I need are Bio 165 and 166 because they expired this year. I graduated from GTCC in 2001.

I would love to keep in touch with you and see what insight you get. I have three children and my husband works 12 hour shifts as a paramedic. So I will have to juggle a lot of things. I am not worried, I know it can be done however I just can't back off my salary too much. I plan to speak with my employer and tell her my plans (dreams) soon.

Thanks again. You are a really big help. :nurse::twocents::heartbeat

Your welcome. I graduated for Arizona State back in 1994 so I had to retake all the classes. It took me about eighteen months. It wasn't too bad but I was a little miffed about taking some of them. I am done with all my pre reqs so I only have to take the nursing classes. I am happy to finally get going!

Sounds like you have everything going for you to get into nursing program in 2010. I hope it works well for you and yes, lets stay in touch. It sounds like you will have to juggle quite a bit but as Mom's we are good at juggling! Good luck and lets stay in touch!
