Anyone applying to the Duke ABSN program for Fall 2009 (c/o 2011)?

I submitted my completed application on November 23rd and I'm anxiously waiting. I attended the open house in September and fell in love with the program. I just thought I would check in here and see if anyone else is in the same boat. It would be interesting to have someone to commiserate with during this awful waiting game :) :typing

Yep, after being rejected by Hopkins (which was the only school I applied to), I had to find other schools. I had been looking at Duke for a while, and they have a great program. So, I applied to Duke and I am also going to apply to Rush (love their program, not so excited about living in Chicago). If neither of those work out, I will apply to NYU (would love to live in NY City and NYU has a decent program).

What about you? Where else are you applying?

Hi everyone:

I also am scheduled to interview with Duke In January. I am very nervous. I applied at John Hopkins but didn't get accepted for early decision. Does anyone know how soon do they let you know?

Looking forward to see what happens with everyone.:heartbeat

Good luck everyone!

Hey Den,

Congrats on your interview offer and welcome to the thread! I second what SFChef mentioned earlier, I've heard that we find out within a couple of weeks after the interview. I'm interviewing on 1/30 so I hope to have an admissions offer as a Valentine's Day gift ;)

Duke is the only school I've applied for, so I praying that it all works out.

I wish you the best of luck with your travels as well as with interview day. I'm local (North Durham) so if you have any questions about the area, I'll do my best to answer or find a resource. Have a great weekend :)

JD Curly, since you're local, you can point out good areas to live once we are accepted, yes??? Just some positive thinking...

After looking on CraigsList, it looks like apartments are so cheap in the area!! I am, however, coming from San Francisco where our rent is more than most people's mortgages.

SFChef,

I like the way you think ;) Visualize success...visualize the admissions letter...

I'll definitely be open to being a resource for questions about local living. I've been in Durham going on 5 months, so I'm a bit of a novice myself, but I feel comfortable in pointing out safe neighborhoods. You're right, the rent in the area is quite reasonable. Don't believe all of the hype you hear about Durham either. There are pockets of "bad" areas as in any urban area, but Durham is overall a decent place to live. Anyone coming from a larger city (SF, NYC, etc.) can appreciate that "bad" is relative to the individual's comfort level. Some areas of Durham has a gang problem, but most crime is localized to gangs and the communities they live in. I always refer to Durham as Chapel Hill's older red-headed stepsister ;)

Anyhoo, there are some beautiful older homes near Duke that are owned by a property manager by the name of Bob Schmidt. There are also plenty of listings on Craigslist and Roommates.com for room rentals, which is how I've been living since I've been here. 9th street is a Duke hangout and there are lots of quaint little spots all over the city. Feel free to PM or post on the board if you have specific visitor questions, I'll do my best to answer :)

Hi SFChef:

I live in NYC currently, hubbie and I moved here earlier this year and I can't adjust here the job market is horrible and the rents are super expensive and small. I am looking for other programs but haven't decided where else to go. I want a place like NC where its quiet and affordable. I am going to take Microbiology now start in Jan 22 online. Its the only pre-req I have to take for Duke. But some schools ask for Chemistry with Lab as well. I don't have it. I was looking at Emory and they have a great school too, but request Chemistry and Nutrition. Looking for other ABSN around to see where else I can apply.

Hi JDcurly:

Thanks so much congrats to you as well!!! I have mine next friday 1/16. So I am very nervous, Do you know of any other good nursing absn schools in the area? I love in NC its very quiet and relaxing..I lived last year about 5 months had to move to NYC because of the job market at the time I lived by Wake Forest and loved it!! I'm just crossing my fingers we all get accepted to the program, I love there program!:roll

JD Curly,

Thanks for offering to point out good places to live. Coming from the City, I am not too scared about "bad" neighborhoods, but I don't want to live in GangBanger central, either. After looking on CraigsList, we've seen some places in the historic Tobacco district of Durham that have really cool lofts and such. After we've been accepted, I'll really start to pick your brain...

Den, that's too bad that NYC isn't working out for you. I know the job market is bad everywhere, but for some reason, I thought it might be better in NYC. I know how expensive it is to live there, but coming from San Francisco, we aren't as freaked out by high rent as most other people are. Still, NY apartments are typically very small and we are definitely not used to that. I was trying to think about programs I've looked at that don't require chem w/ a lab, or nutrition. I'll go back over all the schools I looked at after the big JHU rejection and let you know if I know of any. My problem has been that I took physio and micro online, so I don't have labs for either class, and most schools require a lab component for those (I did take chem with a lab). I don't really feel like going back and taking those classes again, so I'm trying to find schools that will take me as I am...after being rejected by Hopkins (which I totally didn't expect), now I feel like a loser that will never get accepted to any school. That paranoia has made me look at tons of schools and now I have a few more lined up to apply to. I think we both just have to remember that Hopkins is very competitive, and if you're going to get rejected, at least get rejected by the best. One rejection letter does not mean that every school will say no--so, I am going to stay positive and send out a few more apps (including NYU).

Good luck next week on your interview...I would love to hear your thoughts on how the day went.

SFChef:

I imagine coming for California you must be use to the high rents. I and originally from Florida so I'm not use to the rush here, right now I'm a paralegal and the job market is at good as I had thought, but like you said this is allover. I know what you mean I feel the same way, I have a phobia with applying to schools, because of what happened at JHU, you know I didn't like the way the interview went with JHU it was very informal and I felt like it wasn't worth me traveling from NY to MD for how casual it was, to be honest I would have preferred doing it over the phone. Duke's process so far has been great. I will let you know how it goes and if I have any tips will give them to you. I am also doing the same thing avoiding schools that require all this pre-reqs. what are you goals in nursing? Mines is to be a Nurse Practioner.

I was looking last night at the jobs in Travel nursing and its amazing all the benefits you get and even housing! Have you check it out?

Oh, I totally love the idea of travel nursing! And I get bored after being in one place for awhile, so it's the perfect solution for me. Unfortunately, it probably won't be that easy because my husband can't just pick up and move to a new city once or twice a year. However, we would eventually love to end up in Seattle, and I plan on using it as a way to get into somewhere in the area.

I never had an interview at Hopkins, because I didn't apply to the master's portion. I know I want to get a Master's, but right now I want to really see what interests me before I commit to a specialty. Right now, I'm very interested in either a cardiac or oncology specialty, but I am also considering anesthesia (I know, not very original right now). Not for the money (although it is a perk), but because I think that work is really suited to my personality and work style. I like caring for people, but I am much better one-on-one. And in anesthesia, you take histories and develop an anesthesia plan (which is very interesting to me). I love the idea of being in the operating room as well. So, at this point, I am going to keep my options open and really just figure out what interests me.

Hi all.... I just created my allnurses.com account. I have also applied for the Duke ABSN program and will be interviewing this upcoming Friday 1/16. I thought I would join the waiting game with everyone else! :) Good luck to everyone!

Hi! I'm new here too. I'm interviewing at the end of Jan. at Duke and would love to be kept in the loop! Does anyone have an idea of how many people are being interviewed? Good luck to everyone that's interviewing on Friday.
