I am going the Monday AM meeting, and I'm pretty excited about it. I bought the book on Thursday, and I've gotten about half way through it. It does seem like a good book to read. There was a girl at the bookstore who is going into her second year, and she said they didn't have to do this last year.

The book was a quick read. I think they just want everyone to understand how difficult the next 2 years are going to be. Did you see that they changed the math requirement for 2011? Now you would have to test out of MTH080 NOT into it. And I also saw that Fall semester is full so they're not taking anymore applications.

Hi girls, It's been a long time since anyone posted here, I just wanted to see how everyone is doing in their first semester? I got in for Spring 2011 and I'm so excited yet nervous. I haven't received my official letter yet but I have registered for classes. Any advice anyone wishes to share? Thanks:)

Congrats! I am just finishing up 1st semester and things are going great! What classes are you registered for for Spring? I know a couple other people that are starting this Spring also. I would recommend buying your books off from Amazon. You can register as a student and get free shipping for 2 yrs plus there's no tax. Their prices are cheaper than the bookstore and it saved me over $300. Wait till the 2nd 8weeks to buy the nursing kit from the bookstore. There are many books that you probably don't need to buy till later if you can't afford everything, let me know if you really want to know and I'll list them. Ask for a good stethoscope for Christmas. The Littman line is recommended - either the lightweight one or the master classic is good enough. Also I started out with a seperate 3in binder for each class but it was a pain. If I had to do it again I would've done one 3in binder with dividers that have pockets. Some people type their notes in a laptop but I absorb more writing and the professors don't go soo fast that you can't keep up. Good Luck!

Thank you for responding so quickly. I registered for Nur110-Nur111 on tuesday mornings, Nur 112 on Monday morning and Thursday evenings and nur180 on Mondays evening. I'm so glad the first semester doesn't take everyday of the week! Thanks so much for all the advice provided, it's seems like you are really enjoying your first semester. I have already started asking for christmas gifts that are related to nursing school, lol. I have a couple of questions is you don't mind answering. When and where do you buy your uniforms from, do you need specific type of shoes, and how hard has it been? I haven't received my official letter in the mail yet so I don't have any information on anything, I don't know when I'll have orientation and all that so if you have some info on what the letter contains I would appreciate it. I know it's been quite a while since you received that letter yourself. Well thank you so much for responding, good luck in the rest of the semester. :nurse:

No problem! You will get the info on uniforms and stuff at orientation but you need a nice watch with a second hand (would be good if it also showed date and 24hr format), pen light, goggles (like you wore in Micro), comfortable white sneakers (no specific kind), the uniform is from Dove and it costs $58 per top. Shipping is crazy but me and 3 other girls ordered together and split the shipping. I also ordered 2 tops because there are weeks that you will have 2 clinicals and be in the lab so you may need a back up. There are some signs up in the Nursing locker room for people who are selling theirs also. Dove also sells pants but all you need are white scrub pants. I would give you the book list but they change that all the time. I emailed the bookstore and asked what was in the book bundle (because that's how they sell it) and then when I had the list I ordered it from Amazon. I'm not going to lie, Nursing school is hard because there's a lot of content and it's not just memorizing it's applying what you have learned. You end up juggling what class is important this week beacause there's an exam. Get into practice lab as soon as you can to practice CNA skills for that test. And make friends right away to you can form a study group - it's a necessity! I have a great group of girls that I study with all the time and I only knew one of them ahead of Nursing school. Also you can start getting your immunizations that you need at the Health Center and your physical there too. I'd call now to make an appt because they book up fast. Any other questions - ask away!

ahhhhhhhhh about to finish the 1st semester too.. it's been a long one! Everything itsa307 said is what I would recommend too, TIME MANAGEMENT is a big deal, organize your time and make sure you leave plenty of time to study. In my opinion compared to Nur 180, Nur 110 and 111 are a piece of cake. If you had a hard time in anatomy and physiology than make sure you allow yourself enough time to study and then study some more for patho. Although I do know a few girls who find patho easy but have a hard time in nur 110 and 111. For nur 110 and 111, make sure you read the book, it's a must. Where are you doing your clinicals? If you're doing clinicals on thursday evenings @ Alexian Brothers, Ann Rojas is the instructor and she is a awesome. Any more questions just ask :)

Thxs itsa307 and cityof_wonder for all your great advice. I am so excited to start and although I know its gonna be hard I'm gonna give it my all in order to succeed, it's hard getting into nursing school but the real journey begins when you are actually in the program. I will definitely keep in mind all your recommendations in order to prepare for school. How soon after school starts is the Cna skill test and how soon can you start practicing?

I have clinicals at St. Alexius Medical Center on Thursday evenings, hopefully I'll have a good instructor as well.

For us, we had CNA skil testing before school even began, at the Orientation meeting they had a sign up sheet. They encourage you to get into the lab and practice right away. Good luck, if you're motivated and put in the time, you'll do great.
