anyone actually work in informatics?

Hello,

I have a discussion board assignment due, and I need to ask a few questions of someone who is a nurse working in informatics. But I am having trouble finding someone! The questions I need answered are:

1. Do you report to the nursing department, to the IT department or have another reporting relationship?

2. Does anyone report to you?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your current reporting relationship?

4. What are some factors that make your job more difficult than necessary?

5. What do you see as the major challenges for informatics in the future?

6. In terms of attracting nurses to the field, what is a major selling point?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Greetings Aglaia,

Just a suggestion - you might also like to have those who reply to these questions note their job title/role

My title is Senior Manager,

1) I report to the Director of my Division (neither) as I work for a software vendor.

2) No, not currently

3) I don't think there are either/none

4) Resistance to change, politics,

5) same as above

6) autonomy

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply:)

Aglaia,

I work in informatics in two positions - one as Chief Nursing Informatics Officer for Rubbermaid Medical Solutions (vendor) and as Contributing Faculty for Walden University MSN program - Nursing Informatics track. So my answers to your questions are going to be a bit different since my roles are. But I'll answer from my full time position---

1. Neither-I report to Director of Marketing

2. No

3. He is having to learn what I do as I've only been in this position a few months

4. Lots of travel

5. (1) Everyone is focused on Meaning Use and EMR implementations...what will happen when there are no more big EMR implementations just small ones and maintance? (2) How do we make the voice of nursing heard even more loudly starting today?

6. Our work impacts aggregates of patients instead of individuals and data is needed to make quality decisions...again, data/information is where we play

Some people come to it trying to get away from bedside care...wrong reason.

HOpe this helped a bit

Cheryl, thanks! Your answer is helpful.

1. Do you report to the nursing department, to the IT department or have another reporting relationship?

>>> I report to the IT department

2. Does anyone report to you?

>> No

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your current reporting relationship?

>> Actually, I prefer reporting to IT, I am able to build relationships and learn areas that are not just clinical. I'm glad I can ping a server or understand HL7. If I reported to Nursing, I would never get that depth

4. What are some factors that make your job more difficult than necessary?

>> Because I was hired for IT , being a nurse was not a necessity in my position but a benefit. I think not having more clinical staff in IT is difficult for the customers

5. What do you see as the major challenges for informatics in the future?

>> multiple platforms and applications in healthcare software that force a lot of interfacing and fragmented, duplicated information

6. In terms of attracting nurses to the field, what is a major selling point?

>> Being able to improve the lives of patients through better complete documentation
