I'm thinking of attending Northern Essex Community College in Lawrence, MA to get my Associates in Nursing to take the RN Exam. Does anyone know if this school is any good? It's the only one in my area that has night classes and also doesn't require you to take Chemistry (which I haven't taken) so I can get my degree faster.
Also, what about Middlesex Community College in Lowell?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dawn

just saw your post...NECC has an awesome program, they just signed an agreement with Salem State for rn to bsn. excellent instructors, really geared to adult learners, too. i graduated from there in 2000.

Good Morning.............Does anyone know what you need to score for the TEAS exam to get accepted? I also heard they had a great program. What else do they look for when accepting someone? My lowest pre'req is a B. Any info would be appreciated.
Melgrek--
Technically all you need is to score 40% or higher in every section. However, I believe the average person who is accepted scores in the 80s. I scored 90% overall and got in early decision without even having an A&P grade. I had the highest score on the test in my testing session (and top percentile in the nation also). The average for NECC is about the same as the national (mid 70s). So if 500 people are taking it for the admission cycle and they accept only 80 people (up to 40 of which could be taken from last year's wait list, and another small chunk from Merrimack College), then you'd probably have to score above the average to get in. I'd imagine a lot of people have 4.0s (I do) or else close, so it's key to do as well as you can in your classes. Also, the more classes you have finished, the better.
They only look at GPA and TEAS; I think it's a shame they don't place any weight on other things like statement of purpose, recs, past education or employment. My guess is that they're looking for people who test well enough to have a high probability of passing the NCLEX on the first attempt. And of course high grades so that you have a good chance of making it all the way to the NCLEX. If your science grades are high and you do well on the TEAS, you should have a good shot. Good luck!! Keep us posted. I imagine you're going for the next admission cycle, since it's too late for the TEAS?

Hey everyone!
I just graduated from UMass Amherst w/ 2 non related degrees and I am looking to attend NECCO too! I mean, I can't deal w/ some programs...they are too expensive! I am very overwhelmed w/ the application process though...I have not yet taken A&P or Microbio...I feel that will work against me but i'd hate to wait a year...does anyone know of any schools that have programs starting in the winter? Or of any other cheap ASN programs in Mass that it isn't too late to apply for?
If you are thinking about going to NECCO in the fall you still have time to do your A&P and Micro..it will be alot of work but will be worth it when you are in the actual nursing program, as it is very intense. Best advice I can give to all of you is to read, read, read and form study groups and use them. it is what got me through. best of luck to all of you! mary
MBrickle -- It's too late to apply to NECC for the fall '06 clinicals. The deadline was in January, plus you would have had to have taken the TEAS and they require certain classes to already be taken before you can apply (one of the sciences and several others). If you start soon, you could be in good shape to apply for fall '07. Have you considered UMASS Amherst's accelerated Second Bachelor's program? It begins in January, lasts 18mo, and it would be possible for you to take all the prerequisites by then. It's actually less competitive than NECC (they take about half of the applicants whereas NECC only takes about 16%. If I were in a different part of my life (ie not married with a child ) that's where I'd be hoping to go.

i attended NECCO's program and graduated 2006
I think they accept student into the program based solely on TEAS
each student in my class, regardless of prereq's completed and grades, had about a 96% on the TEAS test....
so study hard, its pretty simple tho
good luck
