I am such a humanitarian at heart with a love for adventure, and although coming straight out of school in december with a large 6 yr car payment and hoping to start a family...I know it will be awhile before I can commit myself to a 27month commitment to work not for pay, but for the good of humanity. Has anyone ever served in the Peace Corp. I have this burning desire to do something great for mankind in a more global persperctive. I'd love to hear any stories from nurses who have served. Gotta have ammo for when I break it to my husband that this is a lifetime goal for me.:monkeydance:

Sounds very interesting! No, I've never volunteered with the Peace Corps - did volunteer for the Navy though! lol

Anyway...I remember recently reading a thread about a new poster that had done a stint in the Peace Corp - do a search....

Good luck

I almost did a few years ago...got all my clearances and they wanted to send me to West Africa. Then other things in life happened, I delayed my service for a year and ended up never going. It is something I *really* wanted to do, and still have a dream of doing.

Peace Corps will not take you if you have dependents, FYI. If it was something your husband wanted to do, though, they could place the two of you together. My husband says there's no way he'd ever do it so we are looking into other ways of living/working abroad.

If I wasn't married, I would go in a heartbeat. I think my husband would go with me because he spent a tour in Iraq and really enjoyed the humanitarian projects that he participated in. However, I know that if you have dependent children that you will not be able to go....and I want children soon, so it is more of a longterm dream. It's definitely something I dream of doing in my lifetime, and who knows...If for some reason we postpone having children it may happen even sooner. I am only 23 years young after all....I'd really love to talk to someone who has experienced it.

I considered it as well. I could not leave for 2.5 years though. My boyfriend wont allow it. And our relationship comes first!

I am looking for other ways now to travel abroad that isnt as long of a commitment.

Sillylilly,

Check into Doctors without Borders (yep, they take nurses, too!)...they have 9-12 month committments, as opposed to the Peace Corps' 2.5 year gig.
