I'm hoping someone here has some advice they might be able to share with me. I'm planning on applying to school in the fall. Unfortunately, my sciences are now over 10 years old so I decided to do UNE's online organic chemistry class. I've never had much trouble with chemistry before so I thought it would be fine. I was wrong. I am having such a difficult time in this course. I feel like it's too abstract for my brain (I do much better when I'm able to visualize). At the rate I am going, I'll end up with a C in the course. I've been doing well on the labs, but averaging Cs on the quizzes. I only have 4 more weeks to go, and I know the final counts for most of the grade. I feel like a lot of the quiz questions are coming out of left field. I can't find the answers in the book or in his lecture. The prof has been very helpful when I've emailed him after the quizzes, but that's obviously a little too late. I really want to try to pull my grade up on the final. I would be so grateful to anyone who took this course who can give me some tips. Thank you so much.
Hi everyone,
I will be starting the Organic Chem 1 course online with UNE in a week. Any suggestions and advice before I start. These posts are somewhat worrying me and hope I do well. Also, any specific professors I should take? Thanks.
Dear figureskate91,
I was considering taking Organic Chemistry I thru UNE. As a student who had enrolled in the course, I was hoping that you could provide some first hand perspective on the course. Are the quizzes multiple choice? Also were the module quizzes and the textbook problems, comparable to the level of difficulty for the final exam?
Hey guys,
Just started this course and after reading all these comments I'm glad I've just begun. I have a month and a half to finish it and just need a C in the class. I just signed up for a Khan academy account and also will be buying Ochem for dummies. From what I can see I shouldn't be buying the actual books so I'll just avoid those. Anybody wanna exchange emails so we can help eachother out?
I just finished the final exam for UNE Organic Chemistry I. Here is a bit insight regarding the class and final exam:
First off, I was given an extension to finish the class, because I just didn't feel confident enough to take the final exam by the end of the semester. This gave me an extra month of studying to focus solely on the final exam. That being said, I encountered the same hurdles that others have mentioned, including the inadequacy of the textbook material and depth of knowledge required to answer quiz/exam questions. I was a nervous wreck throughout the process, but I managed to pass the course with a B (which was very surprising to me).
So this is an honest assessment of what I think I did wrong and what I did right:
The final is very difficult. It took me every bit of 4 hours. The majority of the questions involve knowing the best product from a particular reaction (ie which is the product from this reaction type stuff), which is why I stated to know how to spot and eliminate certain reactions. There is some resonance (carbocation stability, conjugation), chirality, stereochemistry, questions on structure of lipids, sugars, amino acids, DNA/RNA. These are what I can think of off the top of my head.
My particular final was curved 9 points, but I assume that number varies. I hope this info helps. I know there is a limited amount of info out there helping people prepare to finish this class. I'd be glad to help in any way with questions.
also, r cash please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I would love to ask you more questions. This is soooo scary haha
Hi RCash. I am Planning to take O chem I with UNE. So I was wondering do you have same professor mention and can you please email me on [email protected]. I have some insight question for you
Just a caution here guys: please don't post anything that could be construed as asking for test questions, getting an unfair advantage or cheating.
The internet is not anonymous and IP addresses can be traced easily.
Exchanging emails to "ask more questions" might get you more emails (ie from your school) than you want.
Just a caution!
