Any SUNY Downstate Medical Center nurses out there?

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I've heard a lot about the school itself but nothing about working there. I'm coming from a private hospital to this one and was wondering what the pros and cons were. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

They were furloughed last year, so that's a pretty big con. It's a teaching hospital - the quality of the facilities varies greatly from floor to floor. Parking is next to impossible over there.

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

Are they hiring again?

Are they hiring again

Yes. I wonder how many people will be at orientation?

Specializes in MedSurg, PACU, Maternal/Child Health.

I saw postings for SUNY Downstate a few months ago, they were hiring for all departments. A lot of nurses left Downstate when they were in danger of closing....they feared job security. I do not know how stable the hospital is now. I work at the hospital (Kings County) across the street and we still have many patients coming in that used to be Downstate patients. The patients said they heard the hospital was closing so they wanted to transfer. I also seen many postings for Brookdale Hospital online and in Nurse.com, and even say new grads are ok. Brookdale also was in financial difficulties last i heard...so a lot of staff left also. You should research first if they (Downstate and Brookdale) are stable before applying there.

Brookdale was recently cited by OSHA for inadequate workplace safeguards in light of recent assaults on staff, so there's probably a reason there's a lot of job openings there.
