Any success stories for getting in Texas BSN Program with 3.0-3.25 Science GPA?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I have always wanted to become a nurse, and I've been trying to get in for the longest time. I've been through rough patches in my life, like being a rebellious teenager and getting into trouble, but the thought never went away.

I just can't seem to get my sciences above a B. I was close this semester in AP2, but my 89.3 won't round up, which had me nearly crying. I can't argue against it, but I'm losing hope in my ability to make it into a program. I'm currently enrolled here @ UTA, and I specifically wanted to apply here due to being a resident in Arlington as well as living close to my disabled father that I can visit and take care of.

My current stats:

Science GPA: 3.0

Overall: 3.5

HESI: 94

1 consideration - took 3 science classes @ UTA.

I realized that I took Chemistry for Allied Health, so I wonder if I can take the most basic Gen Chem and replace it if I make an A?? That'd still put me at 3.25, though.

Has anyone had success getting into a program in Texas with similar scores? Any advice on what I should do? I know I'm mostly gonna be told to retake classes, but I'm afraid I'm close to using up all my replacements. I'm so worried.... Any reassurance would help. Thanks in advance.

Does that mean your application rolls into the next semester(s) if you weren't accepted for the first round? I don't think they do that, but I will say that I will try to apply every semester. It doesn't affect me negatively, so of course it's worth it!

No, for their online program (which means classes online, clinicals in person), they admit more than Spring/Fall. Here's the info: Online BSN | University of Texas at Arlington Online

And there's a whole forum for that school on here that knows much more than I do.

Specializes in NICU.

I got accepted into UTHSCSA (now UT Health) with a 3.0 Math/Science GPA, which is the minimum. They look at overall GPA, and TEAS score as well, so even though your math and science GPA isn't the best, there is definitely hope. You'll never know unless you apply. Good luck!!

Specializes in NICU, Psych.

I got a BA in Psychology from UTA a few years ago and finished with a 2.9 GPA, but I retook the science classes I bombed and was accepted into the AOBSN program outright (no wait listing). If you aren't accepted, consider signing on with a partner hospital as a CNA or PCT, it adds another "point" or whatever to your application.

Tl;dr: Being a UTA alum and working with a partner hospital got me in the door, even with a pretty poor GPA.

similar to MICUMurse, i graduated with a psych degree while doing my prereqs for the nursing program down in TAMU- Corpus Christi. I know its seems pretty far and whatnot, but my application gpa was barrrrrrrrrely a 3.0, my HESI score want quite the greatest, and i had a whole lot of undergraduate hours on my transcript. but none of that seemed to deter my application too much apparently.

dont be afraid to look outside your comfort zone.

Thank you all for the encouragement! I plan to take Pharm and Patho this coming semester. If I'm not accepted, I'll take Chem at UTA in the summer and reapply. If I'm still not in with science gpa of 3.25 and 2 considerations, I'll retake science. I don't want to give up.

My stats are very similar to yours. I am able to apply now but I am waiting to apply next semester for the spring 2018 because I will then have two considerations.

-30+ credit hours at UTA

-3/4 natural sciences taken at UTA

I will be taking the tease exam after finals next week and also taking nutrition in the summer so that I can apply to multiple schools. Two of my friends applied to UTA. (One was accepted: 3.2 gpa. All classes taken at UTA which gave her two considerations.)

(My other friend-WAITLISTED. 3.8 science gpa. Transfer student. No considerations.)

My opinion is that considerations play a big role in being accepted so try to gain as many as possible. Good luck!

Would you be applying for Spring 2019?

ItsThatJenGirl do you know if there is a link to that page? I'm applying for Fall '18 but have a feeling I will have to reapply for Spring '19 because I didn't do great in AP1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!!
