ANY RN's WANTING TO BE MD's

Just curious if there are any RN's out there who have ever considered medical school and/or attempted prerequitsites?

Sis in law is the MD.. honestly, I don't know how she does it and keeps herself sane...

There is a resident on the ped's floor where I work who started out as an RN, proceeded to finish her MSN and worked as a neonatal NP for many many years. Finally in her 40's decided to pursue medical school and now is in her late 40's (perhaps early 50's) and is in her 1st year of residency. She doesn't regret it at all.

I would LOVE to pursue medicine -- I realized early on in nursing school that nursing probably was not meant for me. I love working with the patients, but I am far more interested in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. And I debate myself everyday whether I should pursue medicine after nursing school (I graduate in August from an accel. BSN program). I am still young where I could be done with med school and residency by the age of 34 or 35. HOWEVER, I am not sure if I am willing to embark on the journey. I know I have the intelligence and determination, but I am not sure if I am willing to put my entire life on hold for that long... and if I would be willing to give up time with family.. traveling.. and everything else I love to do so I could work 60+ hours a week.

To answer the original question, I do know a young guy who did the 4-year BSN, took a year to work and finish a few pre-reqs for med school, and is now halfway through med school. It's not that uncommon - just not the traditional route. But, I bet it gives you a huge advantage in the clinical aspect to have been a nurse before! I actually have the opposite situation, just like some other posters - premed undergrad, accepted to a 2nd degree nursing program. It's good to hear that other people with a similar background are indeed satisfied as nurses! I also plan to get the NP.

When I worked in a community health center, we had a few kids with seizure or other neuro d/o's that we had to refer them out for. The pedi neurologist we sent them to was originally an RN and she was PHENOMENAL.

I know that there are some BSN programs out there that reqire

Wow. Thanks for such a wonderful response. I appreciate the honesty. I, too, have known of a few RN's who have become MD's and every one of them is awesome clinically as well. I did go back and read the thread from September 2007 as well. It's nice to know there are such passionate nurses out there.
