Any Opinions on When to Decline an Acceptance Offer?

i just received an acceptance to my first-choice school, but before that i had just accepted the offer of admission to another school.

i don't want to be taking someone's possible spot in the acceptance list if i'm leaning towards another school, but i want a something to fall back on. i don't think i'm actually accepted to the school until i have my class schedule in my hands and wearing the uniform. anyone in the same position?

It seems to me that a letter of acceptance, with a promise of a spot in class, is the standard across the country. I remember I had to sign and return by a deadline my 'acceptance of the acceptance'.

If you hold on to a slot in another school after you have been assured a place in the first one, you are indeed denying someone their chance, ALTHOUGH the school will give last minute notice to the wait list that a spot has opened up. I've seen that happen even after student orientation. But it does radically increase the BP, etc. for the waiting applicants. By then some have had to make other arrangements and miss out.

I think my dear departed Dad would say in this case 's**t or get off the pot'.

Just my :twocents:, but you asked.

Good luck!

I'd wait as long as possible to give up my seat (registration deadline, payment deadline, etc.)

I don't condone holding a seat unnecessarily, but you also never know what can happen between now and the start of classes to change your plans.

Believe me, the school will have no trouble filling your seat when you are secure in your position at your preferred school.

Best of luck to you!

thank you. i fully understand and i feel so guilty, but i'm so worried about losing my chance on either schools based on anything that might go wrong along the way. the ironic thing is both school have their orientation on the very same day day and they're practically down the street from each other.

I would make certain that you are comfortable with your choice and wait as long as possible to guard against unforseen circumstances as well. It is unfair to make someone else wait, but it is also not in your best interests to shoot yourself in the foot. As others have said, the other school will have no problem filling your slot. Good luck to you in your venture.

yeah, i know if i was in that bubble of getting in or not, i would want that person who isn't sure to just give up their spot. it's the sense of security of something to fall back on is what making me hold out.

i actually just signed the acceptance form to my first-choice and i will be declining the offer to the other school in the near future. i just don't know when though.

Congratulations! Good luck with school!

Welcome to the asylum...:D

TWU is obviously the better school from PVAMU. If you have sent your admission packet to TWU and confirmed that they've recieved it then it is safe for you to "give up" the spot. Congratulations. TWU is a fantastic school.
