Any of you NICU nurses previous patients of the NICU? Im curious because I am interested in the NICU and was also a NICU baby. About 21 years ago, I was born 3 months premature and spent just as many in the NICU. So, how many of you have taken it full circle and came back to the NICU?

I was a NICU baby born 2 months early and my stay there was just as long. I'm considering being a NICU nurse too. I have 3 more semesters left.

I'm considering NICU as a NCLEX Passer. (Can't really say new grad as I've graduated almost a year and a half ago and have struggled with passing NCLEX. The next one is in three days, and I'm so gonna kick it in the butt!) I was a preemie, born at 23 weeks and five or so days. I weighed 1 pound 8 ounces and spent the first 6 months of my life in the NICU at Good Samaritan. I WANT to do this. I feel like I could have been a veggie, and I came out the other side perfectly intact, no developmental delays, or physical deficits, while my best friend was born a month early and has cerebral palsy. So go figure. I just would like to know, should I share any of this in an interview? Or is that way too personal?

I dont want to jump this thread as i wasnt in an NICU when i was born but just wanted to say, we need people like you who have that special connection. I think previous past experiences are so useful.

You could share the fact you were born in an NICU. You could say what your parents told you and how fascinating you find it. Maybe talk about how you would have a connection with parents and show support. You can say as much or as little as you want, i dont think they need to know everything but mainly why you are interested in this speciality. Where would you like to go, where do you see yourself in the future? As a neonatal practitioner?

Is neonates your passion. Its hard work, emotional, challenging, but also beautiful to look after a baby who has been through so much to have a complete u-turn and be discharged. There can be so many lovely moments if thats what you want to be a part of.

My mom always says i was a tiny little one, like a little feather. Still makes me smile. :)

You could just say i was born in an NICU and my parents always tell me how it was the hardest time of their lives but thanks to the support of nursing staff i got better and they are forever grateful. This experience makes me realise my passion lies within neonatal nursing as i owe my life and respect to the staff who nursed me back to health, and i want to give something back to the profession

I'm not but my kids were last year and I've always wanted NICU and I'm a NICU nurse now

I was born at 29 weeks and spent the first three months (nearly) in the NICU. When I decided to go to nursing school, I initially had my eye on L&D. I have a couple good friends who worked in the NICU and they talked me into and helped me get a job there as a tech while in nursing school. Come to find out, the Chief Neo was the attending that cared for me (in a different NICU) when I as born! I have stayed working as a nurse in this NICU and am happy to say that after I pass my certification exam, I will continue there as an NNP! It is definitely unique to be able to have that kind of story, but you have to be careful how and when you share with parents. It is also quite fun to work with "my" doc!

Not me, but my daughter was. Scariest time of my life. But the nurses were amazing and I have been passionate about the NICU ever since. I hope to work there someday.
