ANy NPs in Dermatology

Hi all..Anyone out there know of any NPs working in this area? Is there a need for NPs in dermatology, this area fascinates me and I wonder what would be the best way to gain experience before attending a masters program (FNP)? thanks

I interviewed for a Derm position when I got of school in May - it was to run their acne clinic. I just couldn't see myself doing that full-time so didn't pursue it. However...this was a large practice and they did have several APNs doing various things.

I would contact some of your large derm/plastic surgery practices in your area and see if they hire APNs.

If you're truly interested in dermatology and want to go into a master's program, I think being a dermatology physician assistant is a very viable option. :) There's a lot of info here http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/forums/

Do you think it's easier to get a job in derm as a pa rather than an NP?

Also, do you think it matters that one has an FNP versus say an ANP to work in private practice?

Again, I think its what your particular market is looking for.

Part of it is going to be your training. If you are going into derm you need to be able to suture well. The reason that you see more PA's in derm is they get a fair amount of practice suturing in their ER and Surgery rotations. If you don't have this particular skill I doubt you'll get in the door.

Well - it depends...in my area the big derm/plastic surgery practice has residents that do much of the suturing. The APNs do the clinics, preop H&Ps, post-op visits, etc.. No one but the MDs suture in this particular practice.

That's not the way it works in private practice. No residents. Usually they have one Derm and two PA's. Derm looks at it and sends any suspicious lesions for excision. Pays well. Not my particular cup of tea.
