Any Moms Out There?

Just wondering who else has little kids, and what you plan on doing with them while you are in school. I have two - a daughter who is starting kindergarten next fall, so I am not worried about her. But my son is 14 months, and I still consider him my baby. Just not sure what to do with him while I am in school. Daycare is expensive...I use a pretty cheap drop in daycare for my daughter (my son has never been there yet, they don't take kids under 12 months) that you have to pay by the hour. Even if I feel comfortable with my youngest going there, they open at 8am, which seems too late with school hours. My semi-retired mother was watching the kids but has decided to go back to work. So now I don't have that option, which sucks. So what is the plan for you mothers? And if you are in school (or went to school with little kids) how hard was it? I am afraid between classes, clinical, and LOTS of studying, I would miss out on so much. But at the same time, maybe it would be easier to do this while they are young. I am just not sure.

Satori - Why not try asking this question in the pre-nursing student or student category? I'm sure there have to be moms out there with young kids trying to do this. Good luck!

Hi - nursing is a second career for me.

I waited until my youngest (at that time) was in 1st grade. I was 38.

Hi, I start the nursing program here at Trinidad State Junior college this fall. My two children 7 and 5 will be in school. I personally waited until my youngest was 4 and attending headstart before taking my prereqs. In retrospect I could have taking many of the classes online. I have taken two biology classes online one with a lab and one without. The online labs are way more intense and time consuming than when done in a classroom. Are you starting the nursing program or prereqs? Anyhow, The child care thing can be tricky. Over the two years of prereqs and using daycare part time I have developed a friend ship with the provider and she is willing to come early and stay late for my clinicals and such. I think you'll find a day care that might be willing to help if you ask. Most people have to be at work by 8 so it is a strange time to open. I know here most open by 7 or 7:30. Starting this fall I will have to pay the full child care expense. I plan on taking out a student loan to pay. A stafford loan to be exact. It does not acrrue interest until 6 months after you graduate and you don't have to start paying it back until 6 months after you graduate. And if you don't make it through nursing school (I asked this for myself) how the heck will you pay it back? Its based on your income. I did the math based on my income right now and the monthly payments were not that much. Its doable. Being a single mom going to school I have much guilt about not spending enough time with my kliddos but in the end it will be better for us all. Just think of the example were setting for them too! When my son has a hard day at school I can relate and it makes a big difference in his attitude about school work. Sometimes I even get the kids in on helping me study that way they don't feel so left out. When I look at slides they do too. When I'm doing lab experiments I get them involved if possible. I even got them involved in creating case reports that I had to rewrite using medical terminology. Haha...sometimes this is the only way we can spend time together. Good luck!:nurse:

I actually posted it in here to know what people in Colorado were specifically doing. Maybe hear about a program or daycare center that was really good. Too bad more colleges don't offer daycare. I appreciate the responses. The way things are going my youngest will probably be in school when I start, I am just doing prereq's now, which are easier to work around.

I don't have children, but many people in my class do. Pikes Peak Community College has a Child Development Center at two of its campuses, including the one where nursing classes are held. I have no idea on cost, but many students get financial assistance.
