I know a lot of female nurses who work Pediatrics but not one male. I love kids and this an area I think that I would like to work in. I'm a 37 year male student. Any males working in PICU or Pediatrics? What has been your experience as a male nurse?
:monkeydance:
It is great to here some of your guy's stories about this. I'm still a newbie to nursing but I know I want to do Pediatrics, yes I'm a male. The responses I've got have generally been the "I could never do that" type, which I don't understand because it's not that different from being a parent. I myself strongly desire to be a father, I love the energy in kids, and tend to possess a childlike spirit anyways, so I'm very excited to work with them at that point in my career.
Im a bloke in paeds. Its my first year out of uni, and i couldn't imagine hanging out with anyone other than kids.
the whole family centred care is big in paeds. that being, you look after the whole family as well as the kid.
I work in cardiac right now. totally differnt to adult cardiac. your dealing with congenital stuff ups in the heart, as opposed to wear and tear, life style choices etc.
I was in paeds neuro too.
i encourage you to go for it. as a male, in my opionion you bring something differnt and useful to the team.
I've worked PICU, general peds floor, and peds ER, sometimes with other guys sometimes not. If that's something you're interested in there is no reason not to for try it. Now I work in general ER, but it's a rare week when a parent doesn't compliment me for finessing their kid through a potentially traumatic experience.
Yes, it very much is :).
I did all the pictures when my sister's kids were born. She wanted to be able to show them where babies actually come from, and not be sugar-coating the "big talk". The doctor and I worked great together, and he even directed me on several priceless shots that I might not have gotten otherwise.
It IS INDEED a very eerie, spiritual, and exhilarating experience all at once.
I'm never got married, nor (obviously) had kids, helping with my sister's kids when I can (they just live down the road). But, realizing that kids are "tomorrow", I want to do my part to help them today. I'd like to work in PEDS in some capacity, whether as a PCT or MA/MOA. I think, though, that I might do better with older kids and adolescents than little ones. We shall see.
I think a male nurse or assistant can be just as effective, especially when the patient is male, and might be shy around women, as some are. I've chaperoned male patients, with great results, and less tears.
I've worked with guys in peds in the past, and they were all great to work with. I never saw that there were any problems as far as gender was concerned, either with staff or with parents.
Someone made the point that having nurses who are male might be good for dads. I think it's great to give kids exposure to some good male role models, too- there are too many kids with no positive relationships with men in their lives.
I worked as a pediatric nurse just a couple of months (4 months to be exact) before moving to adult ICU.. men!!! they treat me more than a celebrity! i was the YOUNGEST staff and the ONLY guy out there... cool stuff out there! But the reason that i moved out is because i hate children esp. young ones die... i just can't take it anymore... the way their bros/sis cry, their parents... ohh no! can't take it! but the experience being a pediatric nurse esp if your a male nurse is one of a kind! and take note: the girls ( nurses and the MD's) were awsome!!!!! its like everyday is like a beauty paegent! woohoooo!!!!!
