Hi, every one,

I am planning to get my LVN license. I live in San Jose, CA. I am looking for a program that can offer on line classes. Of course, there are training that needs to be happening on campus. But I hope to get the on line classes as much as possible. Can you shred the light for me?

I work full time and I have two young children, so I would need to figure out a best feasible solution. Is it possible that I can attend an on line LVN program out of the state, and get the California LVn license?

No online LVN programs exist that are accepted for licensure by the California BVNPT. California requires 954 clinical practicum hours, which must be accrued face to face with patients at hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

What will I do doing for the 954 hours? What kind of tasks do I do? I am planning to take the courses part time. Basically, what are the best possible arrangement if I can only afford doing the program over the weekend?

It is your clinical practicum rotation...in essence, you will be functioning as a student nurse who takes care of patients. You will complete most (or all) the tasks that a fully licensed LVN would do.

You must provide extensive hands-on care to patients at hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities before you become a nurse. There is no route to become an LVN that is totally online.

You will be administering oral, topical and injectable medications. You will perform wound care, empty colostomy and urine collection bags, insert urinary catheters, make beds, reposition patients, suction tracheostomy tubes, administer liquid nutrition and water through feeding tubes, and so forth.

You will need to explore your options with any currently available LVN programs in the San Jose area. Doubt that you will find a "weekend only" setup. There is one program that you should avoid, if it is still in operation, but unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it. You might come across it in your research. Suggest you look at the LVN program at Mission College if it is still open.

You can't just study for the NCLEX exam without going to the classes. the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians require you to have clinical hours to meet requirements for a California LVN license. If you ask any school in San Jose or anywhere else most likely they will inform you that no class just on weekends. There are about 1500+ hours you would have to complete just doing theory along with the 954 for clinical hours and that won't be met just by doing a weekend program. I understand that you have to work full time and have to young children however; Nursing is the type of field that you would have to be completely committed to it.

There are hybrid program offered in some other states, not in California. Can I take some of the theory classes from another program out of California and transfer some of the credits back to the LVN programs local? Then I can complete the 954 hours.

Nursing schools almost universally do not accept nursing courses from other nursing programs.

There is no easy path/short cut to nursing. If you want it bad enough you will do whatever it takes.

Pretty much. I understand the passion for one to want to get into an LVN Program but there is no shortcut or easy path. This one classmate of mine had kids and married and had to run a household but she still managed to go LVN school and get it done and did whatever possible to get it done.

gretP0 your best bet to contact a nursing program and then that board of nursing to see if transferable classes is possible which I doubt won't happen unless it's just pre-reqs then it would be transferable at the discretion of the school. However, as my knowledge in california most of the LVN programs require their students to be full-time attending classes and clinicals. Another example, I have a friend that's going to an LVN program in california and she has two children however; she will be attending classes at night.
