Any insight into Herzing or Averett University in Norfolk, VA?

Do you have any insight into a reputable ASBN school? At this point, because I am an older adult with prerequisites past the usual 7 year limit, I am looking at either Herzing or Averett in Norfolk, VA because they waived this requirement. Do you have any insight into these two schools, or another one that is accepting of my older prerequisites?

An Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) is a fast-paced (accelerated) program that allows students to complete a bachelor's degree in nursing in about 12-18  months. The program is designed for students who already have a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing. 

While I can't recommend any particular school, I can offer some general information when vetting a school. It's really important to do due diligence when choosing a school. You need to look at more than one variable before investing a great deal of money and time.

  • Is the nursing program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)?
  • Does the VA Board of Nursing approve the program? Here's a list.
  • What are their NCLEX pass rates?
  • Does the curriculum for ABSN meet the requirements for all other states? If not, which ones?
  • Does the school provide clinical preceptors, or must you find your own?
  • Find out how your potential school ranks in U.S. News nursing school rankings.

Choose a college that has received accreditation from either of the two recognized nursing organizations ACEN or CCNE.  Some states require graduation from an accredited program in order to obtain an endorsed license upon permanent move to a different state.

Additionally, what is the nursing programs attrition rate ( % who leave a program)?

According to the National League for Nursing, the national dropout rate for nursing programs in the United States is 20%, and this high attrition rate is considered problematic. Their Accrediting Commission set the desirable retention rate at 80%..

My prereqs are beyond 7 years. So I'm considering Averett also. Following your thread
