Hi all,

I will be heading to Nellis and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the base. How the hospital is for a med/surg nurse?? Hours?? Dress?? Any info is good info!! I don't know anything or have and idea what i am in store for. Even hearing about other bases and what they are like will be helpful :)

This is second hand info, I don't work there. O'Callaghan hospital is across the street from the main base, but on Air Force property. It is staffed by active duty, VA and I think american hospital staffing. The active duty nurses, docs and techs that I have seen wear ABU's. Not sure about patient ratios but I know some VA nurses there who love it. A new VA hospital under construction off base and will open in 2012 so O'Callaghan may become active duty only at that time.

Nellis is a very nice base in a old part of town. Don't know if this helps.

As far as I know you'll wear scrubs in the hospital. Everyone here wears the uniform of the day in at work and changes at the hospital (some of the MDs don't change). The only place I see ABUs on duty here is in the ED (and no one knows why).

Do they wear scrubs in clinics?

As a rule they didn't use to when I was enlisted, but I have actually seen some folks in scrubs in clinics. I don't know if it's a command thing or if it depends on what department you work in.

God, what great grammar I have at midnight after two glasses of wine (it is, after all, my birthday!).....
