Hi, I just found out in the last couple weeks that my boyfriend is moving to DC in the fall. We have not decided yet if we will try to keep up a long distance relationship or if I am going with him. In the event I were to end up going, I was hoping some of you wonderful DC'ers could give me some info on Children's National. What would my chances be of getting a job there? By the time he'd be moving I would have just finished my BSN and would have 1 year peds experience at a children's hospital (experience primarily in adolescent medicine). I would prefer to stay in pediatrics. Also, I've heard a rumor that Children's National gives out sign on bonuses, anyone know if this is true? If it is, that would be awesome, as I would be breaking a contract to go to DC.Edit: forgot to add, I also have some peds homecare experience. Don't know if that would matter in an interview or not.ChristineN

futurern123 61 Posts Mar 22, 2009 The new grad situation in this area is not very good. I went to the open house at children's a while back and they don't have many jobs available. I didn't hear anything about a sign on bonus, although that would be great. I think the problem is that most of the hospitals, including children's (last i heard), have their budgets frozen and can't hire many new employees. Combined with the high number of new graduates in this area (catholice, GMU, NOVA, marymount, georgetown, to name a few), it is going to be hard to get a job. most of my classmates and myself have had little success so far. i don't know the situation for experienced nurses, but new grads are having trouble. i wish i had better news to report

However, since I do have experience, I'm hoping that would help me get my foot in the door. Christine

kamnan 9 Posts Apr 2, 2009 I actually just got hired on children's national in their cardiac icu as a new grad- position will not begin till sept. i can tell you there was no sign on bonus- i've heard from other people you have to ask about the sign-on bonus with children's. but, i was just so thankful to get such a position i didn't feel right about asking about a bonus! they do have other new grad positions open- i just think they're few and far between... hope this helps.
