I just completed my first semester of nursing school. I am looking for any advice on additional resources to further my knowledge. I read all the required text and utilize some online resources that my textbooks provide. I am really hoping to find a good series that helps with simplifying important concepts and retaining the information. Thanks in advance :)

Hello!!
The Mary Ann Hogan "Reviews and Rationales" series are the bomb! Excellent sources of information, concise, and clear. It comes with NCLEX-RN type questions as well.

For dosage calculations you can also use: DosageHelp.com - Helping Nursing Students Learn Dosage Calculations
AND... believe it or not, the "Incredibly Easy" series are also good and to the point books.

Thank you, I appreciate the links also! I know the "reviews and rationales" is required for my mental health class. The "incredibly easy" series looks helpful.

I agree I like the review and rationales series! My favorite is the medical surgical one because it goes through every body system correlating the labs and what you will see. It was a very good review. If you are having trouble with calculates, I bought calculate with confidence. It was am excellent book, the first few chapters were basic math reviews but after that it gets into common drugs and how to calculate them including insulin and some cardiac drugs but also teaches you how to titrate drugs. It was a very good resource.

Absolutely. I have three I always recommend to students who ask this question.
If your faculty has forgotten or neglected to put the NANDA-I 2012-2014 (most current edition) in your reading list, fake 'em out by excelling at creating nursing plans of care that really show you know how to think like a nurse. Free 2-day shipping at Amazon.com for students.
If you plan to be doing patient care for a living, be good and sure you are rock-solid on physiology. If our patients didn't have something wring with their physiologies, we wouldn't be having to take care of them, would we? The Anatomy Coloring Book and the Physiology Coloring Book are two references that you will use for years. Not jokes, but good reference books that will have your brain learning this critical material in one more way. Also free 2-day shipping at Amazon.com for students.
You'll thank me later. They always do. :)

I loved the Davis Notes books when I was in school. I think I ended up with 4 or 5 of them by the time I graduated. I used either the RN Notes or NCLEX notes to study for Med Surg tests (I don't remember specifically now) and found it to be a quick way to go over everything to keep it fresh. Plus they fit in your pocket so they're easy to carry and pull out when you have a few minutes.
Thank you! :)

I'm going into my second semester as well and I've done my fair share of research on good supplemental material.
I bought Mosby's Pharmacology Note Cards
Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN
Pediatric Success (Davis's Success Series)
Med-Surg Success
Pharmacology Success
Pediatric Facts Made Incredibly Quick
Med-Surg Made Incredibly Easy
I use a lot of resources but it helps because every time the material is presented differently I kind of retain better.
I also have Brunner and Suddarth's med-surg textbook as a pdf that I found online...
