I'll be starting the Accelerated BSN program in SUNY-Downstate this summer. However, from reading posts in this forum, it's pretty discouraging--many nurses are complaining that there are no jobs for them once they graduate! Is this because they are limiting themselves to Manhattan? I'd be happy to work in Brooklyn, close to home. Does anyone know what the hiring is like? Am I making a mistake by going into nursing now?
Wow....15months ago. I don't know what is going on with nurses being hired. I am sure that no one saw this coming. I graduated Jun 08 and I still can't find a job. Somtimes I feel like this is only happening to me. Something that you have the passion to do is not attainable because of no jobs. I suggest that everyone who hold a RN licence go back to school or keep tryin and maybe one day someone will respond...
Good luck guys....
Hey how did you get the job at NYP? Did you apply online? I haven't started my program yet, I hope to get in for the Jan start date and would be done by next Jan and would love to work NYP Labor and Delivery and was wonderig how hard it would be to get in as a new grad. ugh this is making me scared.
If one Googles "Nursing Shortage" there were reports starting a few weeks ago that many of this year's new grads as well as many from last year are having a hard time getting hired. So this is a nationwide trend, not just NY.
What seems to be happening is because of the bad economy nurses aren't retiring in numbers assumed. Then there is the factor of overseas nurses arriving whose paperwork was started awhile ago when there was a shortage, and finally many experienced nurses are returning to the bedside because either they lost other jobs, or their husband's lost their jobs, or the family's finances are shot. Either way a RN with several years experience trumps a new grad in most cases
As for NYC, yes there are lots of newly unemployed nurses loose because of the two recent Queens hospital closures. Consider that NYS and NYC have yet to act on recommendations by a commission that basically stated the state and city have too many hospitals too close together, and sooner or later there may be more hospitals closing.

Singasong,
Quick question: Did you just apply in general for NYP at a job fair or did you apply on their website? I was just wondering if you applied online for a job that said, "one year acute care experience required." I wanted to know if it was worth giving it a try and applying for a job even though I do not have that experience--if it worked for you or not! (I hope my wording made sense...)
Thanks!
