Any Deaf, Hard of hearing Nurses?

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hello, I've been a member for a while and am delighted to finally see a forum for nurses with limitations. I am profoundly deaf and getting deafer everyday. Although I do wear 2 BTE's, lip read, know asl, I do speak and I work in the operating room. Any other deaf nurses out there? I'd love to chat with you sometime.

Awful!! I am so sorry u have to deal with people that are soo damn ignorant. I am HOH myself and looking to go into a LPN program soon. I know I have dealt with many narrow minded people but u have to take a stand and put those people in their shoes. they need to stop treating us like we can't do things or don't know how. U know alot of times when I am working with people I don't mention to them I am HOH until like a few months into a job... they freak out!! Like wow I couldn't tell. But if u tell them from the start they just start judging u... Crazy world.

U hang in there and sue the pants off that discrimnating school. U will not only help urself but future HOH students.

I have a deaf son and I fight for him all the time for him to have open doors to do things. This also allows open doors to other deaf/HOH kids.

I know how ur feeling.

Take care and keep the post going..:yeah::up::smokin::smokin:

Specializes in 27 yrs in long term care, 5 yrs office.

I am planning on buying an electronic scope, what one do you use. And do you recommend that particular brand. I also Have bilateral BTE aides. So far I have to take them out everytime I do BP's and have broke both of them after so much wear on them.

Hello Jessica. What is the name of that school and where, that dismissed you from the nursing program because youre deaf?

I am deaf myself... a CNA thats going to nursing classes. I think if you move on to the correct geographical areas that doesnt discriminate, youll be fortunate...

Hey jolleygirl..

I am not familiar with some of the latest scopes but if u scroll up in this thread and read a reply from dianajh...she explains some types of scopes.

Hope this helps..

next time, when administering meds and or procedures, have it (the aprroval) in writings, casually, with your small notebook which you can communicate with.........

or else, just dont do it.

cheers!

Specializes in None yet.

I am completely deaf in my right ear. I am also completely blind in my right eye. I have had an artificial right eye since I was about 2 years old. I was also born with a cleft lip/palate. I spent the majority of my young adult life in a Children's Medical Center having surgeries. I know ASL, lip reading, and I am wanting to learn how to read braile just to have the knowledge. I want to become a nurse in order to give back to other children like myself the way my nurses gave me to. :redbeathe

Hi. I'm a new nurse. I have hearing loss, and wear bilateral hearing aids. I'm working in the OR. Is anyone else in the same situation?

What should I do to do before start nursing school?

I, too, am hearing-impaired. I wear bilateral BTEs and use a Starkey Amplified stethoscope. I work in critical care. I have done critical care transport and licensed as a Paramedic. I have been hearing impaired since birth and in nursing nearly 26 years, 23 of those in critical care. To this day, there are still coworkers who are ignorant, impatient and down right rude to me. But, they are usually the ones with the shoddy work ethic. They are the ones who spend more time playing computer games, reading novels and fashion magazines, playing on the internet, taking long personal phone calls or watching 2 hour movies then they do at their patients' bedside. In fact, they spend very little time at the bedside because we are the ones answering their lights and alarms while they sit.

Phone calls are the hardest for me especially with mens' voices that are low or those with foreign accents. Spectralink phones are awful even with hearing aids with T-swithches. Anyone else have those same difficulties?

I also wear BTE hearing aides and work really hard almost over compensate to be accepted by my cowokers. does anyone get that from fellow staff. I also spend good $ on an amplified stethescope. Anyone found one to use with aides in the ears. I always fear bacteria transfer when taking them out to listen. I work critical care and burn.

Would love to chat. after 12 hours I know my ears are exhausted... I need to take a sign language class what is recommended?
