Any College of DuPage COD Nursing Students with a bachelor outside nursing?

Published

First off, thanks for taking the time to read on :) I currently have a BBA-Management and would like to pursue studies and a career in nursing. WHile there are many options, the MS and accel. BSN programs are very competitve and I would need 7 +/- pre-req's (paid out-of-pocket.. and possibly out of district $$) and no guarantee of acceptance. Further, if you have attended COD you know how difficult these are to get! Bonus too that COD is significantly less than the private colleges BSN programs-- and pay seems nearly same with RN designation. That being said, I am seriously looking at the ADN Program at COD. After just 2 pre-req's (chem and a&p I) I could get a conditional acceptance before taking the a&pII, cna, etc. From what I see, I have nearly all the gen ed req's too... Has anyone gone this route?

Secondly, if you have went this route... have you been able to get federal student loans for an ADN program after already having a BBA?

Finally, in the admissions process- do they weigh your entire GPA (mine is 3.38) or add the additional combination of pre-req's (not that it would make much difference as I already have 124 credits) or look heavily at scores in the pre-req courses.

Is there any weight in the application for already having completed a degree, work experience, etc.?

Thanks for any info you might have!!!

i do have one question…

did they accept your nutrition class as well?

i think that might be it for now.

thanks so much for responding so quickly.

i never even considered cods nursing program because they are not accredited.

and, why would i waste 2 years on pre-reqs, then hope and pray to get into such a small and program that was not accredited when i could spend those 2 years getting my bsn?

makes much more sense.

hi there,

yes, they are accepting my nutrition class. i was quite surprised since the one at chamberlain has a lab component. (not quite sure what that would be!) i am finishing it up right now with a&p 2. i considered cod because well, it's cheap. makes life easier. i have a ba and i remember paying off those loans and at siu it was cheaper. i have a 3.8 gpa but keep questioning myself on whether or not i have what it takes to make it through chamberlain. i would hate to get so far and then have any problems. i am a little afraid of all the math i will most likely have to take. they have a deal at some adn programs where you can go straight to an msn program and skip the bsn if you already have a bachelors in something else but i have yet to find one. i figured just get the bsn and if i want to move up down the road i would do that.

when were you thinking of applying to chamberlain? i remember getting accepted last year and they really made it simple. all the instructions are on their website on what to do and when. i did like that. i just wasn't that happy with the price tag. lol. but i haven't been working and we have been able to live on my husband's paycheck so hopefully i can get in, pass, and get a job and pay off the loans as quick as possible. that would make it worth it.

the only part i am not sure about is financial aid. i know i am not eligible for any grants and the federal loans would start accruing interest day one. i really never spoke to anyone about that part. i wonder if i would have to wait to get accepted before discussing with anyone in financial aid. not sure about that.

i think you are making a good decision with going for the bsn. they aren't going to be hiring as many rns with adns. there are a few big hospitals that have stopped hiring them. good luck to you and kit and let me know how it's going. i'll do the same!

I am going to apply to Chamberlain as soon as I hear back form the other schools I applied to. Northen, for example, would be much less expensive than Chamberlain if I make it in. However, I would have to live far away. I believe the deadline is July 1st for the Fall semster, but I could be wrong. I am planning on applying no later than May 30th.

It is a very expensive school but I like that they have Summer, Spring, and Fall classes. Most nursing programs don't offer that. I also like that any pre-reqs I don't have yet (Humanities) I can just incorporate into my curriculum. This way I don't have to take them this summer or get denied entrance for not having them done. If I do end up going somewhere else, I will have to take them this summer. Every school has different pre-reqs and I'm finding I won't meet them for all of the schools I applied to. It really is nerve-wrecking.

As far as financial aid goes, I don't think I am eligible either. I'll have to take that loan route too. I'm just hoping in the end I make enough to pay all those loans off. I'll KIT and let you know how it all goes. let me know if you decide on Chamberlain.

Thanks

Valerie

Valerie,

I think you are making some wise choices. I know what you mean about all these schools wanting different pre reqs. What a pain. It might cost more for a private school, like Chamberlain. Have you gone to their open house yet? They have one coming up on Thursday the 22nd I believe at night (don't quote me, check out their web site or you can call over there. I went last year and I was impressed compared to COD but I really liked West Suburban too. I live so close to Chamberlain. I liked the people. I liked that the Gen ed classes are taught by DeVry. That's a pretty good school. I am in COD now and I don't feel like I have received the best education. It has been pretty easy for me. That's another reason to be scared I won't do as well at Chamberlain.

I am working at getting a syllabus from SIU from a math course I took in 1996 (WOW, hard to do). If I can't get it I am going to get the info from my adviser at Chamberlain and figure out how to test out or take some sort of math testing to get out of at least one of the math tests. Then in the beginning of June I should have this semester's grades in and I am going to send them to Chamberlain. They have the rest of them. At that point I can pick when to take the HESI test before the middle of July and apply for the Fall (October) semester. I think I am just going to do it. My adviser doesn't see any reason why I wouldn't get in again. I just have a few more classes done and a higher GPA. If I do get in I will just have to see what is the bottom line, money wise.

I think you will make the money working full time after graduation anywhere you work to pay back loans anywhere. I just get cold feet since I have my husband doing all the work for the 2 years. It feels weird, I'm used to working. I'll let you know what happens. If you know how to "friend me", do so. I am such a dope when it comes to computers. lol If not I will keep checking to see where you are.

That would be kind of fun if we both ended up at Chamberlain. I won't be a stranger to everyone.

Good luck!!

Lisa
